Britain Donates $1.6 Million to STL

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has announced that London will provide an additional £1 million ($1.6 million) to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).

“We will provide £1 million to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, taking the UK’s total contribution to £3.3 million since 2009,” Hague said in a written statement to Parliament on Monday.

Roux: STL Credibility Will Be Harmed if Prosecutor Doesn’t Present False Witnesses Documents

The head of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s Defense Office Francois Roux warned against measures that may affect the tribunal’s credibility, reported As Safire newspaper on Saturday.

He told the newspaper that the failure to hand former General Security chief Jamil Sayyed documents related to the false witnesses file may harm the STL’s credibility.

Report: Baragwanath to Arrive in Beirut on April 1

President of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon Judge Sir David Baragwanath will arrive in Lebanon on April 1, al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Monday.

“Baragwanath has informed the Lebanese authorities about his expected visit in an official letter sent to Lebanon’s embassy” in the Netherlands, sources told the daily.

Bellemare Says Hariri Murder Perpetrators Will be Brought to Justice

Former Special Tribunal for Lebanon Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare expressed optimism that the perpetrators of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s assassination in 2005 will be brought to justice.

“I never despair…Look at the Balkans. Some of them took 12 or 15 years before they were found,” Bellemare, a Canadian, said in his first interview after he resigned his post at the end of his tenure on Feb. 25 for health reasons.

Gemayel Says Christians Concerned, Accepts Understanding with Hizbullah

Phalange party leader Amin Gemayel said Lebanon’s Christians have concerns over their existence in the region following a sharp drop in their numbers in Iraq and Syria and attacks on Copts in Egypt.

In an interview published in An Nahar daily on Sunday, Gemayel said that Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi’s concerns over the Christians in the East are not new.

Report: Recent STL Amendments Confuse Hizbullah

The recent amendments to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s indictment in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has “confused” Hizbullah, reported the Kuwaiti al-Seyassah newspaper on Sunday.

A source monitoring the situation told the newspaper that Hizbullah understood the amendment to be a precursor for allowing the tribunal to accuse parties in the assassination of the former premier.

STL: Prosecution Requests Amendment to Indictment to Include Criminal Association Offense

Special Tribunal for Lebanon Pre-Trial Judge Daniel Fransen has requested the Appeals Chamber to define the crime of “criminal association” following the Prosecution’s recent request to amend the indictment, announced the STL in a statement.

“On February 8, 2012 the Prosecution requested to amend the indictment in a confidential filing only to the pre-trial judge,” it revealed.

Baragwanath: STL Can Address False Witnesses File after Lebanese Govt., U.N. Agree to it

The newly-appointed President of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon Judge Sir David Baragwanath stated that the STL does not have jurisdiction in tackling the “so-called false witnesses file.”

He said in his first public statements since assuming his position: “We don’t have jurisdiction to tackle the false witnesses file until the Lebanese government, U.N., and Security Council agree to it.”

Report: Miqati to Receive Copy of New Indictment on Thursday

Prime Minister Najib Miqati will receive on Thursday a copy of a new indictment in the attacks on the three officials that have been linked to ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s murder, al-Joumhouria newspaper reported.

Media reports had said that Pre-Trial Judge Daniel Fransen made a progress in preparing the indictments in the assassination attempts of MP Marwan Hamadeh and ex-Defense Minister Elias Murr, and the murder of former Communist party leader George Hawi.

Miqati Denies Receiving Official Decision on Bellemare’s Successor

The premier’s office didn’t receive yet any official information on the appointment of Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia Norman Farrell as Special Tribunal for Lebanon Prosecutor to replace judge Daniel Bellemare.

“Prime Minister (Najib Miqati) didn’t receive yet the STL’s decision,” the premier’s sources told An Nahar newspaper on Monday.
