Report: Recent STL Amendments Confuse Hizbullah
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe recent amendments to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s indictment in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has “confused” Hizbullah, reported the Kuwaiti al-Seyassah newspaper on Sunday.
A source monitoring the situation told the newspaper that Hizbullah understood the amendment to be a precursor for allowing the tribunal to accuse parties in the assassination of the former premier.
STL Pre-Trial Judge Daniel Fransen has requested the Appeals Chamber to define the crime of “criminal association” following the Prosecution’s recent request to amend the indictment, announced the STL in a statement on Friday.
It did not explain whether the amendment would indeed mean that parties can be accused of the February 2005 assassination.
The source added that the Hizbullah leadership is now studying the amendments in order to determine how it will properly deal with them.
“Hizbullah leaderships believed that no one would dare accuse the party of being behind Hariri’s murder due to its popular and military might,” said the source.
“The party was counting on the STL to take into consideration civil peace in Lebanon and therefore it would have refrained from accusing Hizbullah of being behind the crime seeing as such a step would lead the party to a confrontation with the Lebanese society,” it explained.
In addition, the Hizbullah leaderships had believed that the tribunal was going to follow the example of the international investigation commission that was only seeking to accuse Syria of the assassination, said the source.
In August, the tribunal released its first indictment in which it accused four Hizbullah members of being involved in Hariri’s 2005 assassination.
Salim Ayyash, Mustafa Badreddine, Hussein Oneissi, and Assad Sabra are wanted for the February 2005 suicide car bomb attack in Beirut that killed Hariri and 22 others, including the suicide bomber.
Ayyash has been named in the indictment as coordinator of the assassination team.
Ayyash and Badreddine face five charges including that of "committing a terrorist act by means of an explosive device" and homicide, while Oneissi and Sabra faced charges of conspiring to commit the same acts.
Amendments or not, if the STL doesn't see the elephant behind the four mice running loose then they'd need very trick magnifying glasses! The Lebanese judiciary, under the watchful eye of Ghazi Kanaan then did not hesitate to indict and bann the Lebanese forces in the mid-nineties, and threw it's chief in prison, for a crime that everyone knew was totally alien to them. It was put together to break the LF opposition after Geagea refused to be part of the Syrian political conspiracy on the Country, and accept a Governmental office. So why should it be different in the Hizb instance, when this time round all forensic scientific evidence is stripping them naked in front of everyone!
Since you know too much. Why Hobeika was killed? Who released Geagea? What forensic evidence. Fingerprints on the bomb? Or the theory of cellular calls. This court wants to bring the end of Lebanon, not the truth.
Wake up! Where are you living? My mother fell in the street as she slipped on a banana peel. Do you think it was put on purpose by an Israeli? I bet you do! Fee² ya 3ammé, fee²!
IT took them 3 days to understand the amended text. Damn... the STL should have included a version in Farsi!
The kuwaiti newspaper have good connection with Hizballah. There is nothing to be confused about. This court is a joke. The purpose of it is to cause chaos in the whole area. For all of you placing bets, whether Bashar survives or not. Better think if you are going to be alive to find out. Here in America, the Israelis are pushing US to start their war for them. This is the best time to do it. Since all of you hate each other to stand against the enemy. None of you will be spared.
that is not correct: we only hate the farsis, and we welcome whoever will clean them out so that our region would see peace once again.
they want to fight, we do not. as simple as that.
and by the way I agree with you: they are going to wage war on hizbushaitan soon.
