The security situation in Lebanon is “fragile” and any security incident may lead to internal unrest, reported Al-Seyassah Kuwaiti newspaper on Sunday.

A centrist ministerial source told the daily: “Unrest will erupt in more than one region, especially in areas of mixed political presence in order to avoid blame being directed against a certain camp.”

MP Strida Geagea slammed on Wednesday Hizbullah MP Mohammed Raad, saying that he could’ve had the minimum amount of “credibility and morality” before criticizing the assassination attempt of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea.

MP Geagea said in a statement issued by LF press office that all the official stances confirm the “seriousness of the attack.”

Head of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Mohammed Raad criticized on Saturday attempts by some politicians to exaggerate incidents and fabricate events, calling on the Lebanese to find consensus among each other.

“Some are exaggerating events or instigating incidents in order to divert attention away from Lebanon's best interest,” Raad said in comments on Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea claims that he had escaped an assassination attempt, without naming him.

Several people were killed and injured in a rocket attack on a Lebanese bus in a Syrian area overlooking the Lebanese border village of al-Qaa in eastern Lebanon, media reports said Saturday.

Initial reports said one person was killed and three others injured when the rocket hit the bus, which was carrying pilgrims to Iraq, after it crossed the Lebanese border and reached the area of al-Jousiyeh.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati held talks with his Italian counterpart Mario Monti who arrived in Beirut on a one-day visit on Saturday during which he will also meet with UNIFIL’s Italian contingent.

“We appreciate Italy’s continuous support for Lebanon in the international community and stability in the South,” Miqati said during a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s press office denied on Saturday an al-Manar TV report that Qoreitem mansion was sold or donated to the French embassy.

The office said in a press release that the report by the mouthpiece of Hizbullah about the mansion being sold for 700 million dollars was a lie.

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel rejected on Saturday criticism by certain parties on the adoption of proportional representation for the 2013 parliamentary elections, saying a draft-law proposed by him allows all sides to participate in the polls.

“All those who rejected the proportionality law are explaining it in accordance with their own wishes,” Charbel told Voice of al-Mada.

Sources close to Premier Najib Miqati and Energy Minister Jebran Bassil refuted claims by an American company representative that his offer on the leasing of power-generating vessels would have cost the Lebanese treasury less than the approved proposal of Turkish ships.

The representative of American company Waller Marine-Buildum Ventures, Rudolph Elias, told Akhbar Alyawm news agency on Friday that his offer would have saved the Lebanese treasury 100 million dollars annually.

Lebanese authorities are hesitant in handing over Syrian refugees to Damascus, fearing that such a move would lead to an increased international pressure on Lebanon, ministerial sources said Saturday.

The sources told pan-Arab daily al-Hayat that Syrian authorities have asked Beirut to hand over several refugees that had escaped the fighting in their country to northern Lebanon.

Austria’s President Heinz Fischer will travel to Lebanon end of April, the first visit of an Austrian head of state to Lebanon, European diplomatic sources said.

The sources told al-Joumhouria newspaper published Saturday that Norway’s ambassador to Beirut has informed Lebanese political parties that Fischer was willing to meet with different Lebanese factions during his visit on April 26-27.
