Berri: 1701 only choice to achieve security and stability

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri noted Friday that “at least since September, Israel has wasted several certain chances to achieve a ceasefire, implement Resolution 1701, restore calm and secure a return of the displaced on both sides of the border.”

Berri voiced his remarks in a meeting in Ain el-Tineh with UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro.

The Speaker also stressed “Lebanon’s commitment to the implementation of Resolution 1701,” considering it “the only choice to achieve security and stability in the region.”

A little-known clause in Resolution 1701 calls on the Christians of Lebanon, who are give half of parliamentary seats by Article 24 of the constitution, and who are perhaps a third of the population--why else would they need this set-aside?--to "live up to their Christian calling by showing mercy to their pagan brothers and sisters". Seriously, Hezbullah would probably willingly disarm, etc., etc., if the Lebanese government was effective. You might expect Hezbullah's trepidation on the use of demographic power to fade as the "authorities" prove in the current crisis that they all have a call on the other line.
