French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian lauded on Thursday the Lebanese government's decision to disassociate itself from the Syrian crisis, saying that France will continue to support Lebanon.

He said: “France will maintain its support for the Lebanese army through all possible means.”

Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Monday that the government will not disassociate itself from the turmoil in Syria when there are attempts by the regime to ignite the situation in Lebanon.

“We will take the necessary measures... We should reorganize the relations between Syria and Lebanon calmly and in a comprehensive way,” Miqati told reporters during a press conference at the Grand Serail.

A man who had crossed into Israel was handed over to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon on Monday, the National News Agency reported.

According to the NNA, Ali Talal al-Daoud crossed into Israel on Sunday night, where he was questioned by the Israeli forces.

Hizbullah MP Mohammed Raad lashed out at the March 14 alliance over its memorandum over the Syrian violations, accusing the coalition of covering up its participation in the aggression against Syria.

“The March 14 memo is incitement against Damascus and directly targets it,” Raad said in a press conference at the parliament.

U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly shrugged off on Tuesday a request by the March 14 opposition to deploy UNIFIL troops on Lebanon’s border with Syria.

“We were concerned by what is happening at the border. But our focus, my focus is very much on what we can do to help the Lebanese Armed Forces,” Plumbly said following talks with Prime Minister Najib Miqati at the Grand Serail.

The head of the Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc MP Fouad Saniora handed on Tuesday President Michel Suleiman a March 14 memo that reiterates the opposition’s call for the expulsion of Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali and the control of the Lebanese border with Syria through U.N. help.

The memorandum also called for the formation of a national salvation government and filing a complaint to the Arab League over Syria’s repeated border violations.

The United Nations Security Council, on the request of Lebanon, unanimously adopted on Thursday resolution 2064 (2012), extending without any changes the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for one year, until 31 August 2013, announced UNIFIL in a statement on Friday.

UNIFIL Commander Major General Paolo Serra welcomed the Security Council’s decision and pledged renewed commitment by the peacekeepers in southern Lebanon to fully carry out their mandated tasks.

The U.N. Security Council on Thursday warned against attempts to destabilize Lebanon as it renewed the mandate of the U.N. peacekeeping force in the country for another year.

The renewal of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon came amid mounting concerns about the impact of the 17-month-old war in Syria on its neighbor.

The Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc noted on Tuesday that the facts released by the media over the case of former minister Michel Samaha and Syrian security chief Ali al-Mamlouk revealed the “extent of the Syrian regime’s involvement” in destabilizing Lebanon.

It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “The revelations require the expulsion of Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali because he had proven his involvement in covering up and participating in crimes in Lebanon.”

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who is scheduled to arrive in Beirut on Thursday, is expected to tackle the Syrian violations along the Lebanese border.

A French diplomatic source informed As Safir newspaper on Wednesday that Fabius will inform Lebanese officials that the United Nations Security Council members reject to expand the mission of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
