Danish Jews on Monday turned down an offer by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to emigrate to Israel following a deadly weekend attack on a synagogue in Copenhagen.

"We're very grateful for Netanyahu's concern but having said that, we are Danish -- we're Danish Jews but we're Danish -- and it won't be terror that makes us go to Israel," said a spokesman for the Jewish Community in Denmark, Jeppe Juhl.

When Danish media flashed images of the suspected Copenhagen gunman, Julie recognized her "nice and very smart" former classmate Omar El-Hussein, a good Samaritan who a year ago rushed to her aid.

"I am deeply moved and shocked," the 20-year-old told AFP in a telephone interview from Copenhagen.

Two men were charged in Copenhagen on Monday with helping the gunman who killed two people in twin weekend attacks that have stoked renewed fears of Islamist and anti-Semitic violence in Europe.

Flags were flying at half-mast across Denmark after the shootings that stunned one of the world's most peaceful nations.

Copenhagen police said Sunday they believe a man shot dead by officers was responsible for two fatal attacks that shocked the normally peaceful Danish capital.

The killings, coming little more than a month after bloody Islamist attacks in Paris that left 17 people dead, were described by Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt as "a cynical act of terror".

A gunman killed at least one person and wounded three police officers after opening fire Saturday on a cultural center in Copenhagen as it was hosting a debate on Islam and free speech.

Swedish artist Lars Vilks -- the author of controversial Prophet Mohammed cartoons that sparked worldwide protests in 2007 -- was among those at the debate targeted by the gunman, who fled the scene after a shootout with police.

The Dalai Lama said Wednesday that the Danish government's reluctance to meet him during a visit to Denmark was "logical" since his retirement meant he had "nothing to ask" politicians.

"I think it's quite logical. I have no political responsibility so even if I met some political leaders I have nothing to ask," the exiled spiritual leader -- who retired from politics in 2011 -- said at a press conference in Copenhagen.

Denmark's government won't be meeting the Dalai Lama in Copenhagen this week after the relationship between Copenhagen and Beijing soured following a 2009 visit by the religious leader.

"The Dalai Lama has not requested a meeting with the government," Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard told AFP in emailed comments.

Several agents are recruiting jihadists to carry out suicide bombings in Lebanon and Syria as the latest report says that a man, who resides in Denmark, is suspected of brainwashing youth to join extremist organizations.

Al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Thursday that security forces are suspecting that M.A., who is residing in Denmark, is playing an important role in recruiting youth to join terrorist organizations with the aim of carrying out suicide attacks in Lebanon and Syria.

Denmark's central bank cut its deposit rate further into negative territory Monday as market players speculated the country could follow Switzerland's example and remove its currency peg against the euro.

The deposit rate, which was cut to below zero in September for the first time since 2012, was reduced to -0.2 percent from -0.05 percent.

Denmark's main Jewish group on Tuesday called for police protection for its school and synagogue in Copenhagen after four Jews were killed last week in a hostage drama in a kosher supermarket in Paris.

"With the situation being like it is, we believe it's very clear that Jewish targets are a high priority for the terrorists," the deputy chairman of the Jewish Community of Denmark, Jonathan Fischer, told AFP.
