Reports: Doha not against Franjieh, believes solution not difficult
A Qatari envoy visiting Lebanon, Mohammed bin Abdel Aziz al-Khulaifi, has not excluded the name of Marada Movement chief Suleiman Franjieh from the list of presidential candidates in his meetings with Lebanese officials, political sources told al-Akhbar newspaper in remarks published Tuesday.
“Credible” sources meanwhile told the al-Joumhouria daily that the Qatari visit is “not part of a Qatari initiative that is isolated from the French-Saudi efforts toward the Lebanese file.”
“The Qatari envoy stressed in his meetings that the Qatari side is confident that a breakthrough in the presidential file in Lebanon is not something difficult and that it can be achieved in a quick manner,” the sources added.

Reality check! First, gas today is cheaper than pre-Ukraine invasion making deep sea exploration doubtful. Second, with Saudi-Iran détente Lebanon loses its regional importance, after losing respect by elected same mafia/militia. Third, with dwindling GNP turning into a beggar nation we lose relevance becoming another Somalia. Fourth, Gulf nations & Europe foreign aid moving away from grant to investment. All investments based on rate of return (ROR) that factors interest and risk. A 30-year loan with ROR of 15% costs 81 times more than ROR 2%. Therefore, any Gulf investments, while beneficial in short term will deprive Lebanese of all future earnings. Solution: eliminate political and economic risk by reforms, neutrality and no arms outside army (or divide country); replace political mafia with respected honest competent leaders with a clear reform and development plan; and regain diaspora trust to come back and invest. Diaspora remains Lebanon best hope.
