President Michel Suleiman stressed on Thursday the importance of Syria’s stability on the economic and security situation in both Syria and Lebanon.

Visitors of the Baabda Palace reported him as expressing a hope that the situation in the Arab state would return to normal in order for it to resume its reform plans.

Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Progressive Socialist Party chief Walid Jumblat discussed the latest developments and cabinet formation efforts, a Hizbullah statement said Monday.

The statement said that Caretaker Minister Ghazi Aridi and Wafiq Safa attended the meeting at an undisclosed location. It did not say when the meeting took place.

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat has reportedly held a telephone conversation with Caretaker Premier Saad Hariri, the first contact between the two men since the Druze leader named Najib Miqati as premier-designate more than two months ago.

Pan-Arab daily al-Hayat quoted informed sources as saying on Tuesday that Jumblat called Hariri and stressed to him the need to return to the national dialogue table.

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat stated on Monday that jumping to conclusions on the developments in the Arab world “may intentionally or unintentionally” harm the interests of thousands of Lebanese residing there.

He said in his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa magazine: “A number of Arab countries harbor Lebanese and it is necessary to monitor their situation.”

Caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri has reportedly told March 14 officials not to target Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat who has fallen out of the alliance.

“I don’t want anyone to target Walid Jumblat ever,” Hariri has said, according to the Kuwaiti daily al-Anbaa.

The Progressive Socialist Party on Sunday rejected the use of weapons locally and called for a defense strategy that protects Lebanon from Israeli attacks.

During its yearly general assembly meeting, the PSP said the use of weapons locally “would destroy all national achievements.” However, the party rejected to keep the country weak amid continued Israeli threats.

The Progressive Socialist Party is expected to issue a statement on Sunday supporting the Resistance’s use of its arms against Israel and rejecting their use on the internal scene in Lebanon, reported the Kuwaiti al-Anbaa.

The document is expected to be issued during a general session for the PSP during which it is set to stress the need for the return to dialogue in order to settle the issue of arms possession outside the state’s authority.

The Lebanese were optimistic on Friday that the new government would be formed within days after a new draft lineup proposed by Premier-designate Najib Miqati reportedly received the consent of major political parties.

“Lebanon will have a government before the end of the month. The next few days are decisive and crucial,” a source close to Miqati told several Lebanese dailies.

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat stated that contacts between him and caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri are completely severed, saying that he will not agree to an individual reconciliation with him.

He said in an interview in Al-Afkar magazine that will be published on Friday: “I support Prime Minister-designate Najib Miqati and if Hariri believes that Miqati betrayed him, then he should explain his statement or retract it. It is best if he reconsiders his position.”

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held talks with Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat in Damascus on Thursday, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, reported.

Following his return to Lebanon, Jumblat said in a statement that the meeting was part of the "continuous communication and consultations with the Syrian leadership," describing the talks as "excellent, friendly and frank."
