Qatar Confirms Two Citizens Held in UAE

Qatar has confirmed the arrest in the United Arab Emirates of two of its citizens, described as "spies" by Emirati media, adding to tension between the Gulf neighbors.

Hamad Ali al-Hamadi and Yousef Abdelsamad al-Mulla were arrested on June 27 at the Ghweifat border crossing between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, a Qatari foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement.

Report: UAE Arrests Qatari 'Spies'

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have arrested Qatari "spies," an Emirati daily reported on Wednesday in a new sign of mounting tensions between Doha and its Gulf neighbors.

The report in Al-Khaleej newspaper, which cited Emirati sources, was in response to a report in Qatar's Al-Arab daily that three Qataris had been subjected to "arrest and torture" in UAE capital Abu Dhabi.

Emirates Suspends Flights to NW Pakistan over 'Security'

Dubai's Emirates Airlines said Wednesday it has suspended flights to Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, after gunmen opened fire at a landing plane killing a passenger and wounding two crew members.

"Emirates has suspended flights to and from Peshawar effective 25 June 2014 until further notice, due to the security situation at the destination," an Emirates statement said.

UAE Jails 6 Arabs for Forming 'Qaida' Cell, Including One Lebanese

A UAE top court jailed Monday six Arabs for seven years after convicting them of forming an "al-Qaida" cell and raising funds for Al-Nusra Front, the jihadist network's Syrian affiliate.

The state security court found the group guilty of "joining al-Qaida terrorist organization and setting up a cell in the UAE... and collecting money to support Al-Nusra Front, to finance terrorist activities outside" the UAE, WAM state news agency said.

UAE to Work with U.S. to Cut Off 'Terror' Funding

The UAE and the United States agreed on Monday to cooperate to prevent "terrorist" groups from using the Gulf state's finance sector, according to a statement from the U.S. Treasury.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan agreed to cooperate more closely "to disrupt terrorist support networks" in talks in Abu Dhabi.
