Jordan's King Abdullah II has warned that Israel's stance in peace talks with the Palestinian is fuelling instability in the Middle East, in remarks published Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal.

"If we can't get the Israelis and Palestinians together in this next couple of days, then what signal is that for the future process?" King Abdullah asked in a WSJ interview in New York ahead of the U.N. General Assembly.

Israeli ambassador to Jordan, Danny Navon was returning to Israel on Thursday with his staff, fearing a large demonstration outside the embassy in Amman over the weekend, Israeli public radio reported.

The Jerusalem Post newspaper said that calls for a mass rally had been posted of social networking site Facebook under the banner "No Zionist embassy on Jordanian territory."

More than 1,000 Jordanians demonstrated in central Amman on Friday to demand "satisfactory" constitutional reforms as parliament debates amendments proposed last month.

"We want to restore our constitutional rights. We demand satisfactory change," read a banner carried by Islamist and leftist demonstrators who marched after midday prayers from al-Husseini Mosque to the nearby city hall.

Jordan's energy czar says his country will sign an agreement with Egypt next month to resume natural gas supplies.

Energy Minister Khaled Toukan says several attacks this year on Egypt's pipeline delivering the fuel may prompt Jordan to look for alternatives, but Jordan will now try to use Egyptian gas to meet its energy needs.

Jordan on Sunday urged an "immediate" halt to Israel's "military escalation" in the Gaza Strip, warning that it threatens regional stability.

"Jordan rejects and condemns Israel's military escalation and operations in Gaza that have killed civilians as well as Egyptian officers," information minister Abdullah Abu Rumman said in a statement carried by the state-run Petra news agency.

Jordan urged Syria on Monday to "immediately" stop violence and start implementing reforms, as more than 2,000 people have been reported killed in a government crackdown on the pro-democracy revolt.

"Prime Minister Maarouf Bakhit today telephoned his Syrian counterpart Adel Safar and told him that violence must stop immediately," the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordan's powerful Islamist opposition said on Monday that the constitutional reform proposals unveiled by King Abdullah II were "important" but not enough.

"After examining the recommendations and the current situation of the country, we would like to stress that they are important, but do not meet the demands of people," the Islamic Action Front (IAF) said on its website.

King Abdullah II on Sunday said a panel he named earlier this year has recommended the creation of a constitutional court as a key step to achieve social and political reforms in Jordan.

Proposals made by the Royal Committee on Constitutional Review are "solid proof of Jordan's ability to revitalize itself and its legislation and approach the future with a vision of social and political reform," the king said.

A Jordanian and an Israeli are to go on trial in Egypt on charges of spying for the Jewish state's intelligence services, the state news agency MENA said on Sunday.

The telecoms engineer from Jordan and the Israeli "officer with the Mossad" spy agency are to go on trial in Egypt's state security court on charges of having worked "to damage the national interests of Egypt," it said.

A Jordanian died of his wounds on Sunday after he was hit by sniper fire last week in the Syrian city of Homs, a hotbed of that county's anti-regime revolt.

"Tareq Mohammed al-Khaldi, 20, died today in King Abdullah I hospital," near the northern city of Irbid, Jordan's state-run Petra news agency reported.
