The political affairs chief of the United Nations Jeffrey Feltman is to visit Iran on Monday to discuss the war in Syria and unrest in Egypt and Lebanon, a report said.

Feltman is to hold talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Mehr news agency reported.

A senior U.N. official will visit Cairo next week to discuss the violent political crisis unfolding in Egypt, the United Nations said Friday.

U.N. Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman has warned that the spillover of Syria's war continues to be felt in Lebanon as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the U.N. Susan Rice slammed Hizbullah for undermining the country's dissociation policy.

“The spillover of the conflict in Syria continues to be felt in Lebanon,” Feltman told the U.N. Security Council during an open debate on the Middle East Wednesday.

"Even tentative steps to dialogue are struggling to take root. The destructive military spiral churns more forcefully each day and threatens to pull its neighbors, most notably and worrisomely Lebanon, into its vortex," Feltman told the U.N. Security Council about the fighting between the troops of Syrian President Bashar Assad and rebels seeking to topple him.

The United Nations warned Lebanon on Wednesday that the alleged Lebanese fighting in Syria's civil war put the country increasingly at risk of being dragged into the conflict.

The U.N. Security Council meanwhile expressed concern over Syrian army operations in the Golan Heights ceasefire zone with Israel and said that also threatens to extend the 21-month old civil war.

Libya agreed on a decision taken by United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon to appoint Lebanon's ex-Information Minister Tarek Metri as U.N. special envoy to Tripoli and head of the U.N. Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Metri will succeed British Ian Martin as head of UNSMIL, whose tenure will end on October 14, a Libyan diplomat told An Nahar newspaper on Thursday.

Libyan security guards were killed and wounded trying to defend U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens during the attack in Benghazi in which the U.S. diplomat died, a Libyan U.N. envoy said Wednesday.

Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya's deputy U.N. ambassador, told reporters that up to 10 Libyan security personnel were casualties of the attack on Tuesday. "Some of them have been killed at the start of the attack," he said.

Feltman has just stood down as U.S. assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs. In his new position he will help form U.N. policy and mediation efforts on the Middle East peace process and other conflicts.
