An Israeli government spokesman accused Hizbullah of exploiting the issue of the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel in order to wage a war against the Jewish state, reported al-Liwaa daily on Tuesday.

He added that Hizbullah is labeling this matter as “the maritime Shebaa Farms,” noting that it is a strictly political affair, which the party is employing for its interests.

Palestinian premier Salam Fayyad will urge Arab nations to deliver pledged aid at a meeting of the Arab League on Tuesday to discuss the Palestinian Authority's financial crisis.

Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki told Agence France Presse that the meeting at the Arab League's Cairo headquarters had been convened at the request of president Mahmud Abbas.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak was on Tuesday to fly to Washington where he would meet top U.S. officials, including new U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, his office said.

Speaker Nabih Berri stressed during a meeting with U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams that the UNIFIL can play a role in the demarcation of the disputed maritime borders with Israel “unless the navy forces of the UNIFIL are only found to monitor our regional waters and shores.”

As Safir newspaper reported on Tuesday that Williams was insisting on his stance during the discussion, saying that the “U.N. isn’t specialized in demarcating any maritime border, and the two disputed countries have to negotiate” over the issue.

Gaza's Hamas rulers on Tuesday executed two Palestinians convicted of collaboration with Israel, the interior ministry said in a statement.

It was the second time this year that the Islamist movement had carried out an execution of someone accused of 'collaborating' with the Israelis.

The Israeli military and police on Monday captured a boat on the Dead Sea which was trying to smuggle weapons from Jordan, and detained two Palestinians on board, officials said.

The Turkish part of Cyprus has warned the island’s Greek side and Israel against a unilateral decision to invest oil and natural gas in their territorial waters, saying Lebanon should not go ahead in approving a deal signed with the Cypriot government.

In December, Jerusalem reached an agreement with Cyprus marking the two countries’ sea borders. That agreement came after Cyprus reached a similar understanding four years ago with Lebanon, though that pact has yet to be approved in the Lebanese parliament.
