Britain's David Cameron will become the first foreign leader to visit Sri Lanka's war-torn Tamil heartland during next month's Commonwealth summit when he will press Colombo on human rights.

The British premier is under pressure at home and abroad to boycott the summit over the bloody end to Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict but he vowed in a meeting with Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to have some "very tough conversations" with President Mahinda Rajapakse's government.

Britain has sent text messages to almost 40,000 illegal immigrants warning them they have no right to remain, officials said Friday -- and admitted that a handful of legal residents were caught up in the campaign.

"Message from the Home Office. Our records show that you may not have leave to remain in the UK. Please contact us to discuss your case," the message said.

Iran and Britain agreed Wednesday to name a charge d'affaires to each other's country within two weeks, following a break in diplomatic ties since 2011, state news agency IRNA reported.

"This agreement was reached at a bilateral meeting between (deputy foreign minister) Mohammad Takht Ravanchi and his British counterpart, Simon Gass," on the sidelines of nuclear negotiations in Geneva, IRNA said.

A British soldier was shot dead in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense in London said, the first British loss of life in the conflict since April.

The government said the soldier -- the 445th British serviceman to be killed in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001 -- had been killed by enemy fire while on patrol in the restive southern Helmand Province.

British police on Monday charged a man who is suspected of attempting to enter Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of Queen Elizabeth II, while carrying a knife.

The queen was not at the palace at the time.

The last major deployment of British troops to Afghanistan began on Thursday, the Ministry of Defense said, ahead of the withdrawal next year of Western forces.

Some 6,000 British troops will deploy to Helmand in southern Afghanistan in stages over the next six weeks, a ministry spokesman told Agence France Presse.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague called Thursday for the immediate release of Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan on Thursday after he was seized by gunmen from a hotel in Tripoli.

"I condemn the abduction of the Libyan prime minister in Tripoli this morning and call for his immediate release," Hague said in a statement.

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban for campaigning for girls' schooling, added another award to a growing list on Friday.

She was given the RAW in WAR Anna Politkovskaya Award, named after the Russian investigative journalist who was shot dead seven years ago next Monday.

Lebanon must take advantage of the International Support Group for Lebanon meeting that was held on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, stressed Lebanese Ambassador to the U.N. Nawwaf Salam.

He told As Safir newspaper on Friday: “Lebanon must commit to the meeting and the pledges on the humanitarian, economic, and security levels.”
