Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is due to make a speech on Monday on developments in his country which has been gripped by four months of anti-regime protests, the official SANA news agency reported.

"President Bashar al-Assad will deliver a speech at noon tomorrow concerning developments in Syria," SANA said in a terse dispatch late on Sunday. It gave no further details.

Telecoms tycoon Rami Makhlouf, a cousin of President Bashar al-Assad who is on a list of 13 Syrians facing EU sanctions, said Thursday he will allocate profits from his businesses to charity.

"Profits from the shares I own in Syriatel will be allocated to charity, humanitarian work and development projects" for people across Syria, Makhlouf said in a statement obtained by Agence France Presse.

The European Union on Thursday began work to toughen sanctions against Syria, looking at adding firms and a dozen people to a blacklist which already includes President Bashar al-Assad and key allies.

Several diplomatic sources said experts from the 27-nation bloc were discussing ways Thursday of "widening sanctions" against Damascus.

Renowned Syrian poet and intellectual Adonis urged President Bashar al-Assad to end his crackdown on popular protests and cede power to his people, in an open letter published on Tuesday.

"The Socialist Baath Party has not remained in power this long because of the strength of its ideology, but because of the power of its iron fist," wrote the French-based Adonis, winner of this year's prestigious Goethe Prize and one of the most popular poets and essayists in the Arab world.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan telephoned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Tuesday and urged him to stop a bloody crackdown on protesters and launch reforms, Anatolia news agency reported.

Erdogan told the Syrian leader to "refrain from violence and end the unrest" that has swept Syria since anti-regime protests erupted in March, the report said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday telephoned President Michel Suleiman to congratulate him on the formation of a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Najib Miqati after nearly five months of wrangling, Suleiman's office said.

For his part, Suleiman hoped “calm and stability will be restored in Syria in the nearest time.”

U.S. sources have informed caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri about a plan to assassinate him in Beirut, “which was supposed to be carried out in May,” Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai reported.

In a report published Monday, the newspaper said the U.S. warnings to Hariri “coincided with similar warnings from the Saudi and French authorities.”

Around 30 people held a sit-in outside the Kuwaiti embassy in Beirut on Sunday shouting slogans in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad, the National News Agency reported.

NNA said that the small crowd later dispersed without any clash with police.

Thursday’s meeting between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat did not focus on the issue of Lebanon’s cabinet formation process, but rather at the possibility of tasking the Druze leader with “mediating between Syria and Turkey,” whose once warm relations have grown colder over Damascus’ violent crackdown on protesters, MTV reported Friday.

Meanwhile, OTV reported that Assad told Jumblat that “Syria has overcome the dangerous phase and that it has started to contain the situation caused by the conspiracy plotted by some major world powers and Arab states.”

Syrian troops launched Friday a long-feared crackdown in the northwestern town of Jisr al-Shughour, as at least 22 civilians were shot dead by security forces when thousands of pro-democracy protesters took to the streets across Syria under the slogan "Friday of the Tribes."

Protesters poured on to the streets of main towns and cities after the weekly Muslim main prayers, many chanting slogans against President Bashar al-Assad and in support of residents of Jisr al-Shughour.
