Three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone will be awarded a top prize at the Czech Republic's Karlovy Vary international film festival this year, organizers said Tuesday.

The US director is set to receive the Crystal Globe award for his contribution to cinematography at the 48th edition of the event in the western spa town of Karlovy Vary.

The 66-year-old, who won Academy Awards for "Platoon", "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Midnight Express", has directed films as diverse as "Nixon" and "Natural Born Killers".

"He writes, directs and produces films which occupy all corners of the film making spectrum - from traditional stories to highly provocative movies which often examine pressing social and political issues," organizers said in a statement.

Last year, British actress Helen Mirren and US actress Susan Sarandon each won a Crystal Globe at the festival, which runs from June 28 to July 6 this year.

In 2012, the festival drew more than 121,000 cinema-goers.
