President Michel Suleiman voiced on Tuesday his support for the army's efforts to maintain peace and stability in Lebanon.

He said after meeting Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn: “The army's measures to preserve security have demonstrated that the state and all of its institutions are the only safe haven for all the Lebanese people.”

“The people have to once again thwart the schemes being devised against Lebanon,” he added.

“They should work together through dialogue and openness in order to make it through this difficult phase and prevent the repercussions of regional crises from spreading to Lebanon,” Suleiman stressed.

He added that the political authority in Lebanon supports the army's mission.

Clashes broke out on Sunday in some neighborhoods in Beirut and the northern city of Tripoli after the funeral of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan.

The army has since intervened to contain the situation.

Hasan was killed in a car bomb in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district on Friday.

The March 14-led opposition and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused the Syrian regime of being behind the crime.

The opposition has since been demanding the resignation of the government, accusing it of covering up the crimes of the Syrian regime in Lebanon.

Agreed! We all know that the Lebanese National Army is the firmest, most loyal, and sadly has the biggest burden.

They should arrest and prosecute every terrorist that shot at our Soldiers.

Mr. President please be courageous enough and say that the only arms in a democratic country should be the state with independent judiciary.

Allouchi, with all due respect, that is not true.
The constitutions of countries such as the USA & Switzerland obligate citizens to be armed as a militia to protect against foreign enemies and tyrannical governments.
Also please remember, Lebanon, Swizterland as well as the USA, are not "Democratic States", they are REPUBLICS. One must understand the difference.

Shakespeare, You make a good point but countries such as USA & Switzerland approve and control state (citizens) militias. I believe that these militias are lightly armed and not allowed to have thousands of rockets and other heavy weapons. Finally, I am sure these militias don't influence or control the governments of countries such as USA & Switzerland.

@phoneix:what i mean, the president is not sitting doing nothing, far from that..he is admirably driving the country through the storm, till the RIGHT time comes.
if u prefer .. he is waiting by the river..till bashar bite the dust, and he will.
N.B.if somebody else is waiting too, that does not make a problem for me
