Jumblat: Syrian Regime Prime Culprit behind Aleppo Fire, Destruction

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat on Monday voiced regret over the recent burning of several souks in the war-torn northern Syrian city of Aleppo, stressing that the embattled regime of President Bashar Assad was “the prime culprit” behind the destruction in Syria's second city.

“The city of Aleppo is burning and turning into rubble and debris amid a state of indifference, not to say collusion by all the parties and forces involved in the Syrian crisis,” said Jumblat in his weekly editorial in al-Anbaa newspaper, his party's mouthpiece.

Syrian activists said fierce clashes between government forces and rebels in the historic districts of Aleppo triggered a major fire in the city's medieval souks, or markets.

The covered souks, some of the Middle East's largest, were once a major tourist attraction.

Rebels fighting to topple Assad launched Thursday an offensive to drive his forces out of Syria's largest city and commercial hub.

“The first culprit behind the burning and destruction (of Aleppo) is the Syrian regime, which is seeking survival at any cost, even if it was at the expense of Syria's unity and above the bodies and human remains and the ruins of the cities,” Jumblat added.

The Druze leader also blasted the Syrian regime's key allies, Russia and Iran, over the destruction in Aleppo and their support for Assad.

Jumblat did not spare the so-called Friends of Syria grouping of nations, saying they have refrained from offering real support to the Syrian opposition and urging them to provide rebels with “anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems in order to accelerate the toppling of the regime.”

The PSP leader also slammed some of the new factions of the armed Syrian opposition over the blaze that gutted Aleppo's souks.

“Some of those factions, and their supporters, do not care about the heritage of the city of Aleppo and its ancient cultural and historic sites,” Jumblat lamented.

Turning to the political scene, Jumblat called on the fragmented Syrian opposition to close ranks and produce a “unified central leadership” in order to be able to bring down Assad's regime.

The old fool speculates like always:)Terrorists set the Aleppo on fire, if the us and other terrorist countries didn't provide them with arms then Syria would still had been as beautiful as always and 30000 Syrians still alive.

Jumblatt also called on the international community to provide Shiites of Lebanon with anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles to enable them to express their true numbers in the ballot box. Estimates are that Shiites are half of Lebanon's population, but receive, under the so-called equality of the Taef Accord, only a share of the Muslim bloc, which as a whole is only half of Parliament's seats. Christians, perhaps a quarter of the national population, receive the other half of the seats. Thus the Lebanese Army is an extension of the Christian militias. Jumblatt said, "This flies in the face of reason, and I worry what God thinks about it." He added that the defense of national minorities, such as Druze, depends on a stable and transparent civil rights regime.
Of course, he is such a liar that he will deny making these statments I am making up for him.

You don't believe my estimate? Let's count them.

Christians make up half of the country and so there should be no problem in supporting their electoral law proposal, Berri remarked.

it is in the interest of no politician to make an exact survey of the population. like that they can argue claiming they are the biggest majority and so on and keep the country in a state of despair to better manipulate people....

Thumb chrisrushlau 01 October 2012, 21:17

and all the politicians, including Patriarch al Rahi, agree that the present system is better than civil rights (one person, one vote), so the people as a body of citizens have no voice--but whose fault is that?

Missing peace 01 October 2012, 22:01

lebanon is a retarded middle age country. the only viable system is a secular one. but no cleric wants it; too bad for their business and privileges! as long as they play on the fear of the others then lebanon will stay a third world country with its citizens encouraging it!
so all the electoral laws they all defend just make me laugh! seeing each one is trying to take advantage of it but nothing is done for the country to develop, much easier to manipulate the people like that....

Here's some recent evidence on Lebanon's Shiite population share.
"Interestingly, in Iraq (82 percent) and Lebanon (77 percent), countries with Shia majorities but notably torn by sectarian strife, Sunnis are significantly more likely to say that Shias are Muslims than are Muslims in Arab countries with small Shia populations.
[The percentages are positive responses to the survey question, not shares of Shiites in the populations.]
