Security Forces Continue Crackdown on Cannabis Fields in Bekaa
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe Internal Security Forces and Army resumed on Saturday the crackdown on cannabis fields in the eastern Bekaa.
The Directorate General of ISF issued a communique saying that 130 dunums of cannabis crops were destroyed in the village of Hermel in the Bekaa.
On Wednesday, the residents of the town of Deir al-Ahmar in Baalbek held a sit-in to protest the crackdown on cannabis in the area, deeming it limited only to their lands and some neighboring areas.
The residents also demanded the government to carry out its promises to compensate the farmers and to find alternative crops.
There are over 30,000 dunums of cannabis crops in the northern Bekaa and security forces have so far destroyed around 7,730 dunums.
The area for long has been reputed as a fertile ground for drugs. During the civil war, the drug trade thrived into a multi-billion dollar business.
