Berri Urges Swift Oil Exploration Off Lebanon Shore
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةSpeaker Nabih Berri stressed on Wednesday the importance of swiftly completing the necessary steps to launch oil exploration off Lebanon’s shore.
“This vital issue shouldn’t be delayed,” Berri told MPs during his weekly meeting with lawmakers.
Local newspaper said on Wednesday AMAL and Free Patriotic Movement ministers are divided over Lebanon’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
Earlier, Berri said in comments published in As Safir newspaper that the cabinet’s decision to tackle the EEZ is a “positive” indication that the government is serious in tackling the matter.
“Prime Minister Najib Miqati should activate the cabinet’s productivity as any accomplishment regarding the oil exploration is affected by it,” the speaker said.
However, FPM Energy Minister Jebran Bassil lashed out at attempts to re-discuss Lebanon’s EEZ when the cabinet had previously resolved the matter.
“Re-tackling this matter sets the clock backwards, while we should make use of every minute in exploring oil off Lebanon’s shore,” Bassil told As Safir.
He pointed out that the delay in digging for oil is not due to the different points of view over the EEZ, but it is the result of the delay in appointing the oil authority members, which is tasked with overseeing the petroleum sector for the purpose of exploring the reserves.
“The government should prioritize the appointments of the oil regulatory authority and not re-discuss the EEZ, which was already agreed on,” Bassil said.
Sources close to Prime Minister Najib Miqati said that the controversy facing the appointment of the oil regulatory authority is the name of the Shiites member.
“The government is working on resolving the dispute,” the sources said.
However, Berri later denied to lawmakers the issue, saying: “We confirm that we have agreed on the name.”
Lebanon and Israel are bickering over a zone that consists of about 854 square kilometers and suspected energy reserves there could generate billions of dollars.
The cabinet approved in September the proposed borders of Lebanon’s EEZ in the Mediterranean.
In June, Lebanon was able to restore 530 square kilometers of a maritime zone that it considers it to be within its EEZ.
Media reports said that, the U.S. and the United Nations acknowledged Lebanon’s rights to control the 530 square kilometer disputed area after prolonged diplomatic and political efforts.
Sources in the Foreign Ministry told As Safir said that Lebanon should exert efforts to restore the remaining 300 square kilometers.
Lebanon has been slow to exploit its maritime resources compared with other eastern Mediterranean countries. Israel, Cyprus and Turkey are all much more advanced in drilling for oil and gas.
Every politician is a liar--doesn't matter if it's in this country or not. They want to show their point of view and will sacrifice facts to do that---it's a fact of life and if more people understood it, we would be much better off. As for crooks, you have to ask yourself on how a person like Berri can grow up from owning next to nothing to becoming one of the biggest land owners in Lebanon. I don't think he has ever been directly asked that.
I am not saying all politicians are crooks and liars, there are a handful on both camps. The political parties themselves are the biggest problems however. If the people in power want to prove people like me wrong, they should start making government much more transparent and have politicians tell everyone where they are getting their money from and if they have any conflict of interest with anything they are proposing or voting on. Until that happens, I will believe what I believe unless they can show me differently.
It's easy to throw around accusations without proof, especially ones that are loaded with politcal animosities. In other words, cheap shots. Until then, Gebran Bassil has the benefit of the doubt. He also shouldn't be hindered as the article says neighboring countries are beating us to the drilling. This means every second we waste is irrecoverbale as our resources diminish due to drainage.
What are you still doing here BSThrower. Go to an Pro-Iranian site where you belong and from. Your not even Lebanese and you will NEVER see the day that your country (Iran) will take us over....even with your HA thugs and their weapons!
A better and TRUTHFUL link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVFlkm2Njhw
Shame on you! Traitors of Lebanon!
Have no time to watch a movie snip while knuckleheads like you hijack this site with delusional comments, lies and promoting murderers like HA. Go back to Iran....well for all I know you are there as we type.
You need a bad licking boy! All you do is play around on this site fabricating aliases and voting yourself up and others down like a little girl. Be happy that no takes you serious and have a screen to hide behind. Iranian scums like you have no weight or credibility!
Amal and HA are bickering on the head of the oil authority. But they always do so in private. Once they agree, hopefully, it will go ahead.
I do hope nothing will be discovered because we're governed by thieves and liars. Oil & Gas in normal countries is a boon, in Lebanon it may be a curse!
I wish our politicians from both sides will read this exchange of messages to find that Lebanon's majority of people do not respect or trust them anymore. They'd better go in peace. They have done nothing to be proud of. History will remember that lebanon during the last seventy years period was governed by a bunch of miserable and misdemeanor politicians who excelled in nothing but mediocrity...
I bet you like voting yourself 6 thumbs up....somewhat in line with your delusion that HA/IRAN/ASSAD will rule the world. BSThrower....a legend in his own pea-sized brain. Pathetic!
Frankly, if Berri wants to steal our natural resources, I'd much rather let the Jews exploit them. At least their people will be benefiting... Not their politicians, it's time someone judged Berri and the others, and confiscate their lands and money before redistributing it to the people of Lebanon.
Berri wants a hand in the oil contract before he gets voted out after ASSad falls. If this means an Iranian, Chinese, or Russian company doing the drilling the answer will be no deal.
FT what the hek was that vid clip , it's weird... And bigsamis reply was just as weird.
The united nations needs to list the reserves as international protected zones that way neither Israel or Lebanon or anyone else can touch it!!
Agree Phoenix. I agree that Cheikh Bachir would have been great for Lebanon. But Each country has its problems and its martyrs. Let us try to do our best with the cards we have.We have a lot of things in our favor.
