SANA: Israel Frees Syrian Prisoner Sedki al-Maket after 27 Years

The longest serving Syrian prisoner in Israel has been freed after 27 years behind bars, Syria's official news agency SANA said on Wednesday.
It said Sedki al-Maket, who was arrested in August 1985 for resisting the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights, was released and had returned to his home town on the strategic plateau.
He was jailed by a military court for 27 years and served his sentence in several prisons in Israel, SANA said.
Maket, 45, comes from Majdal Shams, the largest town on the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and unilaterally annexed in 1981.
"(Maket) was brought up within a family known for its struggle against the occupation in the Golan," SANA said.
The vast majority of its 18,000 Syrian inhabitants, mostly Druze, who remained from the Golan's original population of 150,000, have refused to take Israeli citizenship.
Damascus demands a total Israeli withdrawal from the Golan as the price for a peace settlement.

Surely the fact that the Syria - Israel border was quiet ever since the 6 day war, should have brought about prosperity on the Syrian side of the border as well as the Israeli side. Unfortunately this didn't happen, and so we read about tons of items like apples going across from Golan Heights to Syria to help feed the population there.
Again another example as to what peace between the Arab States abd Israel could have brought about.

And yes look at the peace egypt and jordan got..... dictatorships, no freedom of speach, no soverignity of its territory, resources stolen, living under threat, poverty for most while a small elite gets super rich. This hero fought to protect his village and country whih is partly occupied by israel. The entire golan heights is syrian. Mah the gates of hell imprison every zionist. They come steal land and kill people and then jail people for "having the nerve" to fight opression. God will teach you that there is a price for doing what you have done and for what you are doing.
