One more Syrian general crossed into Turkey Thursday, bringing to 21 the number of generals who have fled the unrest in neighboring Syria, a foreign ministry diplomat told Agence France Presse.

"One more Syrian general turned up at the Turkish border, becoming the third high-ranking officer crossing into Turkey over the last three days," said the diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Turkey has become home to dozens of defectors who have crossed the border and formed the Free Syrian Army in opposition to President Bahsar Assad's regime.

On Monday, a Syrian general and several soldiers crossed the border with Turkey and two brigadier generals on Tuesday night.

Turkey is home to more than 43,000 Syrian refugees who have fled the violence, and been accommodated in camps near the border. The camps also shelter rebel forces made up of army defectors.
