Iranians on Explosives Charges in Kenya Granted Bail

Two Iranians charged with possession of explosives reportedly to be used in bomb attacks in Kenya were released on bail Monday, but ordered to surrender their passports by a Nairobi court.

Ahmed Mohammed and Sayed Mansour, who deny all charges, were arrested last month in the port city of Mombasa, reportedly with 15 kilos (33 pounds) of powerful explosives.

"I have found that the two are not capital offenders and even if they were, the constitution allows them bail," magistrate Paul Biwott said. "The offences are bailable and I see no reason to deny them bail."

The pair were ordered to each pay bail of two million Kenyan shillings ($23,500) and to report to the police twice a week. Trial was set for July 23.

Israel last month accused Iran of plotting attacks against Israel in Kenya.
