The Daily, a digital newspaper created by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., has been launched as an application for the iPhone, the creators said Thursday.

The app was launched last year for the iPad tablet with much fanfare, generating what the company said was "hundreds of thousands" of downloads.

The Daily, as an independent news product, has a subscription price for users outside the United States of $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year for platforms including Android. For U.S. readers, the price is $39.99 per year.

Murdoch, an enthusiastic fan of the iPad, has said there would be no print version of The Daily.

The Daily, which has hired a staff of about 100 people from the New Yorker, Forbes, the New York Post and other publications, arrives on a subscriber's iPad every morning.

The digital publication is Murdoch's latest attempt to find a way to charge readers for content online in an era of shrinking newspaper circulation and eroding print advertising revenue.

Most major U.S. newspapers and magazines have created paid or free versions of their publications for the iPad in a bid to increase online revenue.

Apple allows publishers to set the price and length of subscriptions -- weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly.

News Corp. has not disclosed the number of subscriptions but claims The Daily is the number one news app available on the iPad.
