Iran FM urges President Aoun to save country from 'real foe'

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged on Saturday Lebanese president Joseph Aoun, who had criticized Tehran for interfering in Lebanon, to save his country from its "real foe".

"Based on Mr. Aoun's comments, one would think it's Iran that has occupied 1/5 of Lebanon, displaced 1/4 of Lebanese and bombing his country on daily basis... Save Lebanon from your real foe, Mr. President," Araghchi wrote on X.

Agree, now President Aoun and the Government of the Republic should aim for an almost immediate agreement with Israel. By the way what has happened with the Iranian Ambassador who was "expelled" months ago?

Mohammad Reza Sheibani never presented his credentials to President Aoun before the Lebanese Foreign Ministry declared Sheibani persona non grata and ordered him out of the country. He is staying inside the Iranian embassy which is granted inviolability under the "Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations" and it operates under special protections that make it legally distinct from the surroundings. Think Manuel Noriega at the Vatican Embassy in Panama, Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London or during World War II, when several neutral diplomats used their sovereign embassy grounds and diplomatic immunity to hide, document, and save thousands of Jewish refugees from persecution.
