Al-Rahi calls on MPs to elect 'sovereign president'

W460

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on Sunday expressed concern that the fate of presidential election sessions will continue to be linked to "consensus."

"We continue to pray for the election of a president. How can a parliament consider vacuum as being the possible option and election to be impossible?" al-Rahi added, in his Sunday Mass sermon.

"If MPs don't rebel against themselves and elect a sovereign president, the people must not be blamed if they rebel against them," al-Rahi said.

"The failure to elect a new president would be an act of sabotage to undermine the main post," the patriarch warned.

Word of the day

sovereign (adj.)

early 14c., "great, superior, supreme," from Old French soverain "highest, supreme, chief," from Vulgar Latin *superanus "chief, principal" (source also of Spanish soberano, Italian soprano), from Latin super "over" (from PIE root *uper "over"). Spelling influenced by folk-etymology association with reign. Milton spelled it sovran, as though from Italian sovrano. Of remedies or medicines, "potent in a high degree," from late 14c.
