Berri: Oil File Will Be First Issue of Discussion with Ban

Speaker Nabih Berri stated on Monday that Imam Moussa al-Sadr was the first individual to speak of Lebanon’s possible oil and gas wealth.

He said before his visitors: “The oil file will be the first topic of discussion with U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon during his upcoming trip to Lebanon on Friday.”

He added that he had brought up this issue at the national dialogue sessions that were held in the past, citing studies carried out by major companies that confirmed the existence of large reserves of offshore oil and gas.

Addressing the parliamentary electoral law, the speaker said: “Proportional representation is the most appropriate form for the law because it eases sectarianism and asserts national unity.”

Turning to the situation in the Arab world, Berri remarked: “It’s important for Lebanon to distance itself from these developments to avoid its negative repercussions.”

He said that the developments are a cause for concern, voicing a fear that they may pave the way for regimes that “grant freedom, but do not threaten Israel.”

On January 4, the cabinet approved the executive decrees for the law on oil excavation in Lebanon’s territorial waters.

Energy and Water Minister Jebran Bassil said that finalizing the decrees was a step that “highlights the seriousness of the Lebanese government and Lebanon in addressing this issue.”

“According to the studies and analyses we’re conducting and developing day after day, our oil wealth is spread across our entire exclusive economic zone and it’s not limited to a certain area and there are no disputed areas,” Bassil revealed.

The only file for discussion is disarming hazboula and amal. Then we have no more files to discuss with anyone.

the filthy zionist entity have only one fear and that is our glorious resistance.

that's why they always talk about disarming it. this is the only constant in their writings. other themes come and go, but our resistance remains an obsession.

the lebanese female branch of the filthy zionist information war department talks big words that have no meaning or sense and "talk of the night will be erased in the morning". These uninnocent attempts failed in the past and will fail in the future because they are pure and utter nonsense whether they come from man or woman. Woman sometimes halucinate in some periods of the month and we understand this situation. Oh, one more thing, dream on......

the sooner the better, one year of income from the fields of gaz and oil will cover all our debts and we still get a surplus ,

It's amazing that the ONLY thing Berri seems to be concerned about is oil. Obviously this guy is heavily involved in any potential oil exploration projects and stands to make a huge amount of money from it. The country is going to hell, the parliament is dysfunctional, Syria is in the throws of a revolution and we don't know how that's going to effect us yet, Israel is undertaking major military exercises in Shebaa Farms, inflation is rising, sectarian strife is growing, Hezballah has become a state within a state and makes what the PLO to us in the 70s & 80s seem like childs play...but all Berri cares about is oil. Unbelievable.

@libanie Yes Berri will benefit. So what? doesnt king abdallah benefit from Saudi oil? doesnt bush benefit from american oil? But the rest of the country will benefit too. And syria's problems are syria. if it needed to boil over to lebanon, it would have boiled over. And israel's problems are israel who cares about them anyway why are we always talking about them. And sectarian strife is at its lowest with the country divided by ideology not sects. As for Hezbollah, it will eventually mature up after they gouvern for a few years. And become purely lebanese like the sunni became in the 90s. And lebanon will be a rich (albeit corrupt) oil exporter. So instead of nagging, think how you can make a difference in your country. and rejoice in our country

I wonder why one of the most known thief (berri) in the country is so excited about the oil in Lebanon.I guess he can't wait to fill up his bank accounts with more of our nations money

Thumb jabalamel 10 January 2012, 22:22

the filthy zionist information war department is trying to convince us that our oil is not priority and can wait for million years.

and some other stupidities.

Missing peace 10 January 2012, 23:35

could they tell how much is it going to cost to produce? will it be economically competitive with other gas producing countries? why not also enhance other forms of less poluting energies such as hydro electricity (projects exist but have been put aside for many years, why?) windmill ...
knowing how easily public money disappear from ministries , how the financial controls are going to be made? who will do it?

the eagerness to execute this project only shows the greed the politicians have in making money...
and the irony is that in this case they didn t boast their anti americanism , the geological surveys were made by a US firm!

Thumb jabalamel 11 January 2012, 01:50

the filthy zionist information war department is trying to present drilling as a bad idea for several so called "reasons".
they see "irony" that usa firm did the geological survey because they believe that usa economy should only serve them.

behind all those stupidities is their greed for our oil and gas
