Bolivia Seeks Emergency Security Council Talks on Jerusalem
Bolivia said Wednesday it will seek an emergency open door meeting of the U.N. Security Council if U.S. President Donald Trump moves forward with plans to transfer the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
"If this decision is taken, it's a threat not just to the peace process, but also it's a threat to international peace and security," said envoy Sacha Soliz of Bolivia, which holds a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the council.
"It would be a reckless and a dangerous decision which goes against international law, the resolutions of the Security Council."
A senior U.S. administration official said Trump would make the announcement at 1800 GMT from the White House on the city considered holy by Christians, Jews and Muslims and whose status is a critical issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The move would upend decades of careful US policy and ignore dire warnings of a historic misstep that could trigger a surge of violence in the Middle East.
Most of the international community does not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, insisting the issue can only be resolved in negotiations.
