Berri Lauds STL Funding, Says it Benefits Lebanon
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةSpeaker Nabih Berri voiced on Wednesday his satisfaction with the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, saying that it falls in the country’s interests.
His visitors reported him as saying: “The government should now focus on tackling various pressing issues.”
“Work should be sped up on all fronts,” he was quoted as saying.
In addition, the speaker’s visitor stated that he had stressed the need to bolster the conditions to resume the national dialogue under President Michel Suleiman’s sponsorship.
Berri also received telephone calls from Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati congratulating on Lebanon’s successful funding of the STL.
Miqati announced that he had transferred Lebanon’s share of the STL funding on Wednesday morning.
“My insistence on funding the STL emanates from my keenness on protecting Lebanon, the people, the army and the resistance,” he said from the Grand Serail.
Lebanon is obligated to fund 49 percent of the tribunal budget, which amounts to some $33 million.
Those words must have tasted very bitter Berri. You didn't even have a vote on it so you didn't look like an idiot. M14 was correct. The money was smuggled to the STL no thanks to you.
I don't think Beri had anything to do with facilitating STL funding; but he is the one to benefit the most as his ally (maybe enemy) Huzbullah is weakened from this action. Sooner or later, Beri realises that Huzbullah would disintegrate as the Situation in Syria changes in favor of the opposition. Beri is not really viewed negatively by the Syrian opposition and his forces don't appear to have involved themselves in the war within Syria. he knows he stands to benefot the most from the regime sollapse in syria by weaving a strong bond with the Syrian resistence. The Shai in Lebanon will always be a forceto reckon with and whatever might the situation in Syria be, they will always play a role in shaping Lebanon's politics, albeit with lessor powers than they have now.
Lastly, I do hope that one day we could have a different speaker. This speaker has been around for long which in my opinion is sick in any democracy. He should retire and do something else.
