British Ambassador to Lebanon Tom Fletcher welcomed on Tuesday strong action taken by the Arab League, hoping that its decision to suspend Syria’s membership would lead to greater freedom, stability, and respect for human rights.

He said after holding talks with Prime Minister Najib Miqati: “I underlined our disappointment at Lebanon’s position at the Arab League meeting.”

The ambassador revealed that Miqati had explained to him “the unique pressures faced by Lebanon on this issue.”

“In the uncertain period ahead, we must all work for stability and coexistence in Lebanon,” Fletcher added.

On Saturday, the Arab League suspended Syria’s membership, with 18 countries out of 22 voting for the decision.

Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria voted against it, while Iraq abstained.

Fletcher did not agree with Mikati about the government decision because Fletcher does not care about what is best for Lebanon.
