Arabs League Urges Syria to Withdraw Tanks from Streets

A proposed Arab League plan to end months of bloodshed in Syria includes a demand to remove tanks from the streets, the head of the pan-Arab group Nabil al-Arabi told Agence France Presse on Monday.

"The Arab proposal to Syria calls for withdrawing tanks and all military vehicles to bring an immediate end to the violence and give assurances to the Syrian street," Arabi told AFP in the Qatari capital Doha.

The Arab League was on Monday awaiting a response from Syrian President Bashar Assad to its plan which, Arabi said, also calls for a dialogue to take place in Cairo between Syrian regime officials and opposition figures.

Arabi's statements came after an overnight meeting Sunday between a group of Arab foreign ministers and their Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem in Doha that was convened to address fears that unchecked Syrian bloodshed could further inflame the Arab world.

Repeating previous warnings, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani told reporters that Assad risks forcing an international intervention if he allows the violence to continue.

"The entire region is at risk of a massive storm," said Sheikh Hamad after Sunday's three hour meeting.

"What is required of Syria... are concrete steps that could avoid what happened to other countries," he said, in an apparent reference to NATO's military intervention in the popular uprising against Libya's slain dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

At an emergency session in Cairo on October 16, the 22-member League called for "national dialogue" between the government and opposition by the end of October to help stop the violence and avoid "foreign intervention" in Syria.

these conditions cannot be accepted by this regime as they are a confirmation it no longer controls the situation, and at the same time, it cannot not accept them, as it will be like signing their own death.... interesting....

Funny very Funny allouchi, you know what let me give you a wake of reality and justice, but first of all we both agree on the arab league having no guts but regarding sanctions do you know that:

if Saudi arabia and qatar and or (arab league) stop oil flow to the world as a threat for weeks months years ( i can assure you they are not goin to die of hunger given the billions wealth they have saved) so if they do as "sanctions" onto the world with the demand to solve the palestinian issue which is the very core of the problem and has always been, then bingo! most of the problems of the middle east is solved as a one giant leap forward.
but now i get a two face response from people like you to bring in sanctions on an arab country were there are a some protests happening in the streets and totally ignore the big picture and the rotten apple of it all.
Hypocracy at best typical arab behavior always missing out the big picture, no wonder you have always had dictators ruling you!

Very nice...but sooo unrealistic!
What are you asking for exactly? A 3rd world war??
Do you really think that cutting the oil is a realistic move that would drag no consequences from the rest of the world?? The world would retaliate with cutting them from water, comodities, food, products...
They cut off Israel, they can cut off Syria!

Can name any kurdish region where women do not killed from HONOUR KILLINGS (check it from internet, Kurdish awkward people from Turkey killed women as she insulted their family honour, even she has been raped).

Can you name which of kurdish village is not governed from tribe leaders as it is in feudal regime of 16th century?

Can you name in which kurdish village man do not marry with a second wife even it is forbidden by Turkish Law?

Look at your how pathetic is your culture then talk about Turkish democracy capiche?

@ the patriot:

The world is already at war and its been so for a hundred years in this region , so let them stir it up a little more and show some balls if they have any i'm sure the "civilized" world will show their true faces.

but i can asure you the world will BURN amd lebanon first in line and be in a far far worst situation should the UN impose a no fly zone over Syria.

This is why it amazes me at some of our suicidal lebanese who pray to see this happen.
