Berri Will Not Participate in Parliamentary Polls if Main Party Boycotts it

Speaker Nabih Berri refused on Wednesday staging of parliamentary elections, if it was boycotted by a key party.

“I support the staging of parliamentary elections but reject carrying it out if a key party boycotted it,” Berri said during his weekly meeting with lawmakers at Ain el-Tineh.

Al-Mustaqbal Movement leader Saad Hariri had stated on Tuesday after talks in Paris with French President Francois Hollande that the presidential elections should be a priority for Lebanon, revealing that his movement will not participate in the parliamentary polls should they be held in the absence of a president.

Berri revealed during his meeting with MPs that he will call for a session to elect the heads of parliamentary committees, its members and the parliament's bureau members on October 21.

Some political blocs have been demanding that the parliamentary elections, which are set for November, be held even if a head of state is not elected.

Others have been demanding that parliament's term be extended for a second time given the vacuum, poor security situation, and dispute over an electoral law.

Poor security and the disagreement over the law forced the extension of parliament's term last year.

Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended in May.

Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have thwarted the elections.

Has Lebanon ever not have a Prime Minister or House Speaker for so long.

Christians keep turning cheeks from side to side, continuously.

The truth is - nobody gives a damn about our country. We must lift ourselves by our own bootstraps!

ie they agree to disagree. Who wants to bet that a main party will boycott it? Its like watching a bollywood movie.

Cmon ya FT lets be honest now, why would Aoun or Gaegae run for president? The christians are divided 50/50 approximately on both of them. You may say "but we need a strong president!!" strong in what manner? Strong in war tactics and war? For what? To divide the Lebanese even more? No we need a person that has the backing of all the Lebanese, same goes for all the other posts btw. Thats how we begin to evolve from a farm into something that resembles a modern free country.

he is shameless indeed. Why would Mashnouq receive the Iranian offer of assistance to arm the LAF?! Mashnouq is the interior minister and the army falls under the minister of defense. Anything you can concoct to slide in your sectarian agenda.

France said the conditions for the USD 3 billion deal to provide weapons to the Lebanese army with Saudi financing have been met.

But mowaten and flamethrower (southern cannot be mentioned) said it is a joke and flamethrower said today:

"France is currently discussing with Lebanon the delivery of arms to the Lebanese military under a $3 billion Saudi grant."

another M14 lie in the light of what KSA said: they will not activate the grant without an (M14) president.

good one eagle!

flamethrower, what are you talking about? The issue was never presented to Parliament coz it does not need Parliament approval. It only needs cabinet approval just like the recent Saudi deal. If it was presented to Parliament, provide any links to evidence your ridiculous claim. I am sure you will not find any.
