Tensions in Tripoli Following Overnight Clashes between Army, Masked Gunmen
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةClashes erupted overnight on Saturday between the army and masked gunmen in the northern city of Tripoli, reported the National News Agency on Sunday.
It said that fierce fighting broke out when gunmen opened fire at army positions on Syria Street, the Starco, Brad al-Bisar, al-Ghoraba, Talaat al-Omari, and al-Qobbeh areas.
The army responded to the sources of the fire and clashes soon ensued.
Soldiers pursued the gunmen throughout the city.
In addition, NNA said that an explosives belt was detonated against an army patrol as it was leaving its station at the Hariri project area at Talaat al-Omari.
One soldier was wounded in the attack.
Soon after the development, the army blocked a number of roads leading to the areas that witnessed unrest to preserve the residents' safety.
A man identified as Jawad Muzhir Sabbagh was critically wounded in the clashes, reported NNA.
The fighting has since subsided, but tensions remain high in Tripoli, continued the new agency.
Tripoli had witnessed numerous rounds of clashes, between local gunmen, linked to the conflict in Syria.
The army implemented in April a security plan aimed at cracking down on the gunmen.
It has arrested a number of suspects, but many remain at large.
A similar plan was adopted in the eastern Bekaa region.
Aoun's personal delusions and greed rendered all institutions ineffective and gave a fake sense of legitimacy to hezbollah. As to @drew's comment, yes the army cannot stop hezbollah from going to Syria, but what amazes me is they did not even try or criticize such actions. HA has a lot of enemies and when the army is seen by those enemies as complicit with HA,, it opens up the army to all kinds of attacks. This is not a position any Lebanese wants the army to be in.
ex-fpm "Aoun's personal delusions and greed"
Let's see, Aoun signs an understanding pact with HA many years ago, and years into the deal, the christian community in lebanon is fairing much better than their brothers in syria, iraq and egypt. I would think Aouns decisions were pretty rational and stem from his concern for the well being of his community rather than personal greed, dont you think exfpm.
hehehe, so Aoun's illegal pact with the terrorist militia is what keeps the christians in Lebanon safe and fairing much better than their brothers in syria, etc.! No, it is the Christians faith in Lebanon and coexistence that will keep them safe and sound and they don't need an alliance with the devil. But again, only a shia would say that.
As long as Lebanon has people like above comments, we will always be the poop hole of the Middle East. Nuke all Lebanon and get it over with.
