Ban 'Noah' Movie, Says Egypt's Top Islamic Body

Egypt's top Islamic body said on Thursday the big budget Hollywood biblical epic "Noah" starring Russell Crowe was irreligious and should not be screened in the country.

Al-Azhar institute, one of the region's main Sunni Muslim authorities, said the movie, slated to open in Egypt on March 26, violated Islam by portraying a prophet.

The film has already angered some Christian institutions in the United States, with Crowe's reportedly unconventional portrayal of Noah.

Al-Azhar can play an advisory role on censoring movies and books in Egypt, but does not have the final say.

Portraying a prophet "contradicts the stature of prophets and messengers... and antagonizes the faithful," the institution said in a statement.

Egypt's censorship board must approve any movie before it is shown, but it was not immediately clear whether it has approved "Noah" yet.

The Paramount Pictures website said the film would be released on March 26 in Egypt, and a day later in other Middle Eastern countries.

Egypt has censored other movies in the past, including the blockbuster "The Da Vinci Code" after protests from the Orthodox Coptic Church.

But it did allow the screening of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ", which depicts Jesus being crucified.

Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet and was not crucified.

Idiots. And pretty ballsy idiots at that, what with their tourism industry based on an ancient religion with a colourful pantheon of deities, every other shop or café in Cairo and Giza being named after one of those deities, and the national air-carrier, EgyptAir, having the head of Ra as its logo.

I am really amazed as to how people fight, and confront each other over stories that are based only on fables and legends. If one to contemplate the story of Noah, the Arch and the Flood that has killed all of mankind as god’s decree will surely notice that it is scientifically impossible to build a boat that can contain all living beings. The story of Noah is another prove that religions are nothing but mere cultural inventions based on false understanding of the universe. Earth is not the center of the Universe and neither are humans. Pity are those who fight to uphold false and fabricated legends as holy or miracles of some sort. We are only but a dust in billions upon billions of galaxies and planets like Earth. Anyone who claim otherwise is living in denial and only following his or her irrational tribal customs and belief.s
