U.N. Council Urges Calm on Israel-Lebanon Border

The U.N. Security Council on Monday "deplored" the killing of an Israeli soldier in a cross-border shooting and called for moves to ease tensions with Lebanon.
A statement agreed by the 15-nation body welcomed action already taken to investigate the killing on Sunday, which Israel has blamed on Lebanese troops.
The Security Council "deplored the shooting of an Israel Defense Forces soldier by a Lebanese Armed Forces soldier" and "called for calm and continued restraint by all parties."
The U.N. peacekeeping force in south Lebanon said earlier that the killing of the Israeli soldier as he drove near the unofficial border appeared to be "an individual action."
Israeli troops fired across the border in retaliation but officers from the two sides also met to discuss an investigation.
The U.N. council welcomed statements by the two sides "of their interest in preserving calm and stability" along the border.
U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon has already called for restraint by Israel and Lebanon. A U.N. force has patrolled their border area since a brief 2006 war when Israel entered south Lebanon.

Reports are being floated that the shooting was done very close range, using a pistol rather than a machine gun. Furthermore it is said that the Lebanese soldier comes from the Baalbeck area. The whole matter is about a drugs deal gone wrong, the Israeli owed previous money to the Lebanese soldier who refused to pay his debt, it was then that the Lebanese soldier shot the Israeli. But please don't take my word for it, I am just trying to reflect something now looking very persistent, otherwise why are things being kept so muted. Whatever it may be, this version of the story contradicts the published version of an Israeli soldier shot in his vehicle whilst on patrol. I hope that we will get to know soon.

Personally I am inclined to doubt the official version. First, we all know that Israeli patrol vehicles are armoured built bullet proof, thus can withstand most known bullets. Then it is Winter, currently the region is going through extreme weather, so in most cases the slain Israeli soldier was in all probabilities not inside his vehicle and therefore unprotected. If in case he was inside the vehicle, then most probably he would have survived any such attack. If the Lebanese side wanted to use high calibre rifles, then it would be easy to detect in any case. Under the circumstances, I am inclined to believe the close contact version, under which the Israeli soldier was shot at very close range, by a small handgun. But let the official version confirm this.

Israel did not randomly bomb Lebanon. Lebanon initiated the cinflict by attacking Israel, killing several of its soldiers and taking sesveral others hostage. Lebanon would certainly regard such an action as an act of war. Also, Lebanon fired many rockets at Israel.
