To Karim_M...does m stand for metweleh!!!??...no one is debating the legitimacy of the opposition in Bahrain...but i don't think they have been sheld and murdered the way your alawi friends did...should the bahraini/saudi behaved the way syrian officials acted, your bahraini opposition could have been at sea now swimming towards iran!..

Even AFP is losing its courage. Today it says Assad is "shelling rebel positions". Last week it would have said he was shelling cities.
How does Israel deal with snipers? It blows up the whole building. I am not curious at all about what AFP said about Israel's Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in 2008-9 or its invasion of Lebanon in 2006.
The real news here is that Germany and France have not learned anything from World War Two. They still think they have the right to rule the world. They don't realize that England already has legal title of ownership and the right, therefore, to lease parts of the world to the US and Israel. We call this "the international community".

This was not a "Friends of Syria" meeting. To recognize the SNC as "the" legitimate representative of all Syrians is meaningless within the context of the statement. To have made such a statement would be to delegitmized the Assad Regime, that is, it is not the legetimate representative of the Syrian people, which in law, would make the Assad Regime an illegitmate usurper on Syrian territory for which Chapter VII, Article 51 should therefor be invoked to oust the foreign invader on Syrian Territory, the Assad Regime.

The only thing that will deter Assad from murdering as many Syrian people as he believes is necessary for his own personal security, is something that the international community has, to date, refrained from doing. There is no plan or even threat for a countervailing military response. It is the ONLY language that Assad understands. As long as there is no military response, nothing else will change Assad's conduct, much less turn his regime out of power.

@beiruti, re-read your correct statement and think, does that implicitly imply something perhaps?
The West is going along with Russia's asserting its global weight and correctly calculating that Assad et al will in the end screw up just like he has always done that Russia will have no choice but to send him the thumbs down. Of course after it secures at least some of its interests in Syria when it becomes clear with Assad it is likely to loose them all. One may not agree with the West but that does not make them idiots.

@libnanfirst... What?? My point quite simply is that the international effort is and has been feckless. No one is fooled. If the objective is to stop Assad from killing his people, statements and resolutions without an element of force, are useless.
On the other hand if the purpose is to save Assad, while appearing to do something else, then this policy is a ringing success.
