Uganda's presidential contenders held their final campaign rallies Tuesday, a day after opposition supporters clashed with police leaving at least one person dead.

Key opposition candidate Kizza Besigye, a three-time loser who was briefly detained by police in Monday's chaotic protests, said he was still confident of ending veteran President Yoweri Museveni's three-decade grip on power in Thursday's vote.

Uganda's army said Thursday it had taken custody of a top Lord's Resistance Army rebel captured in Central African Republic, and would transport him home.

Okot George Odek, once one of LRA supremo Joseph Kony's most trusted aides, was held by Seleka rebels in CAR who on February 6 handed him over to U.S. special forces, working alongside Ugandan troops hunting the LRA.

Activists in Uganda warned Friday of a crackdown on press freedom weeks before presidential elections, after a radio station was taken off air following an interview with a key opposition candidate.

The government however insisted there is "no crackdown" and said the radio station, Endigyito FM in Mbarara, about 270 kilometers (170 miles) west of the capital Kampala, was shut due to non-payment of licence fees.

Uganda's defense minister is in Burundi in the latest bid to kickstart peace talks between rival factions in the impoverished central African country, presidential officials said Thursday.

The International Criminal Court unveiled Thursday at least 60 new war crimes charges against the deputy leader of Uganda's brutal Lord's Resistance Army, including using child soldiers and keeping sex slaves.

"The prosecution gave formal notice that it intends to expand the scope of the charges against Dominic Ongwen," the Hague-based court said, adding it planned to file the additional charges on December 21.

Two African leaders resumed mediation talks in the capital of Burkina Faso on Saturday, three days after a coup that reignited violence in the troubled Sahel state.
