The Lebanese army arrested on Thursday suspected terrorists during raids it carried out on Syrian refugee encampments and residences in the northeastern border town of Arsal and the northern city of Tripoli.

One assailant was killed and several others were injured when the army opened fire on them in Arsal for setting fire to tents in refugee encampments, said the army.

Three army checkpoints in Tripoli, came under gunfire on Wednesday and the soldiers fired back.

The National News Agency said “army units deployed between al-Omari and Barrad al-Bissar streets and responded against the gunmen who shot at their checkpoint.”

Police have arrested a Lebanese smuggler and scores of Syrians and Palestinians trying to flee to Italy, the state-run National News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Around 107 Syrians and Palestinians from the southern refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh were arrested at the port of the northern city of Tripoli, NNA said.

A Lebanese soldier was killed on Tuesday after gunmen opened fire on an army post in al-Beddawi near the northern city of Tripoli, the military announced.

An army communique said troops responded to the 4:00 am attack by opening fire on the perpetrators, adding that military units were pursuing them to arrest them.

Libya's Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani on Monday won the blessing of parliament for his proposed cabinet of 13 ministers, after a previous line-up was rejected.

Thani and the internationally recognized parliament, elected in June, are in virtual domestic exile in the far eastern city of Tobruk because of widespread insecurity, including in the capital, where a rival administration has been set up.

An army checkpoint was attacked by a hand grenade on Friday in Tripoli, only hours after a roadside bomb targeted an army vehicle and killed two troops in the Bekaa border town of Arsal.

"An unknown assailant riding a motorbike hurled a hand grenade towards an army checkpoint in the al-Omari area in Tripoli's Syria Street,” state-run National News Agency reported.

A number of Syrians residing in Lebanon settled their legal status Wednesday in the northern city of Tripoli after they were exempted from fines, as six Syrians were arrested in the Eastern Sidon region as part of a continuous crackdown on refugee gatherings.

“A Lebanese army force raided places inhabited by Syrian refugees in the towns of Bqusta and Karkha in Eastern Sidon,” state-run National News Agency reported.

Five Lebanese citizens have joined the extremist Islamic State group in the outskirts of the Bekaa border town of Arsal and two of them played a role in the recent decapitation of two captive Lebanese troops, a media report said on Wednesday.

“Five individuals who hail from (the northern city of) Tripoli have joined the IS group in Arsal's outskirts,” LBCI television reported.

Unknown assailants have sprayed pro-Islamic State writings on the wall of a butchery and the car of the shop owner in the northern city of Tripoli, the state-run National News Agency reported Wednesday.

“The Islamic State is on its way,” said the writing on the wall.

Head of al-Mustaqbal Movement Saad Hariri appealed on Tuesday to the Lebanese for calm, warning of slipping into sedition.

“I call on all the Lebanese, in particular the residents of (the eastern) Bekaa valley, (the northern portal city of) Tripoli and the town of Akkar, to be calm, have patience and wisdom,” Hariri said in a statement issued by his press office.
