A high-ranking Palestinian security official revealed on Wednesday that Islamist fugitive Shadi al-Mawlawi has entered the southern Ain el-Hilweh refugee camp.

“Mawlawi entered the refugee camp along with four others, including his wife and a man close to (Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmed) al-Asir,” the source said in comments published in al-Akhbar newspaper.

Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji stressed on Tuesday that the military foiled a plot by terrorist groups to divide Lebanon and change its features, thwarting a Sunni-Shiite strife that “could have burned the country.”

“The army achieved a huge accomplishment,” As Safir newspaper quoted Qahwaji as saying.

The Palestinian leadership at the southern Ain el-Hilweh refugee camp pledged to investigate the presence of Islamist fugitive Shadi al-Mawlawi and singer turned fugitive Islamist Fadel Shaker, fearing the occurrence of a war similar to Nahr al-Bared.

As Safir newspaper reported on Monday that contacts are ongoing between the Army intelligence and the Higher Palestinian leadership at Ain el-Hilweh over Shaker's recent statements and Mawlawi's reported presence in the camp.

A couple and their relative were kidnapped Sunday in the northern city of Tripoli in connection with a marriage dispute.

“A man, his wife and his cousin were abducted in the Tripoli area of al-Dam wal Farz over family disputes,” state-run National News Agency revealed, denying earlier media reports that said the abductees were two women and a child.

A meat shop was shut in the northern city of Tripoli on Sunday for failing to meet food safety standards as health safety inspectors were assaulted in the Sabra region in Beirut.

The National News Agency said that the meat shop, located at the Abou Ali roundabout, was closed after spoiled food was discovered there.

The slaughterhouse in the northern city of Tripoli was temporarily closed on Thursday for failing to meet health standards regarding the way animals are killed and how the facility is maintained.

“The slaughterhouse was closed to preserve the safety of the citizens,” said a statement issued by Tripoli governor Ramzi Nohra.

Several people were arrested Friday during raids by the army and the Internal Security Forces in the North district and the Bekaa region.

“The ISF Intelligence Bureau arrested Sheikh Osama Antar, aka Abu Ibrahim, during a raid in the al-Hawooz Street in Abi Samra” in the northern city of Tripoli, state-run National News Agency reported.

Two car bombs struck near the shuttered Egyptian and United Arab Emirates embassies in Libya's militia-controlled capital within minutes of each other Thursday, an AFP correspondent and a UAE official said.

Two guards posted outside the empty Egyptian embassy compound were wounded in the first blast, Libya's LANA news agency reported.

Army chief Gen. Jean Qahwaji has lauded the residents of the northern city of Tripoli for cooperating with the military in its fight against terrorists.

“Tripoli (provides) an embracing environment for the army, the state and moderation,” Qahwaji told al-Mustaqbal newspaper published on Thursday.

Wanted terrorists Shadi al-Mawlawi and Osama Mansour have been injured in the latest battles with the Lebanese army in the northern city of Tripoli and are hiding among civilians, security officials said.

The officials, who were not identified, told Ad-Diyar newspaper on Monday that al-Mawlawi and Mansour are being guarded by some gunmen in a civilian neighborhood and that any military operation to capture them would inflict dozens of casualties.
