Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes in Tonga Saturday when severe tropical cyclone Ula slammed into the tiny Pacific kingdom.

However, there were no casualties after Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva declared a state of emergency before the storm hit "in order to prevent or minimize the loss of human life, illness or injury".

A 6.3-magnitude quake struck off the Pacific nation of Tonga late Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but there was no tsunami warning.

The tremor hit at 11:07 pm local time (1107 GMT) 89 kilometers (55 miles) east-northeast of Hihifo, Tonga, and 235 kilometers southeast of the Samoan capital Apia, USGS said.

A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but there was no immediate tsunami warning or reports of significant damage.

The undersea quake hit 71 kilometers (44 miles) northeast of the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, the USGS said.

Tongan King George Tupou V has undergone successful surgery in Los Angeles to remove his right kidney after a "significant" tumor was found, local reports said Thursday.

The Pacific island monarch went under the knife at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and is expected to return home on Saturday, the Mantangi Tonga website said, adding that the operation took place last month.
