France's Alstom Launches Brazil's Hydropower Tech Center

French engineering giant Alstom Thursday laid the cornerstone for a global hydropower technology center in southern Brazilian to develop turbine models for the Latin American market.

The center, which will become operational in July 2013, is to be housed in Alstom's state-of-the-art hydropower manufacturing plant in Tabaute, located 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Sao Paulo.

Hacker Group Anonymous Takes Down Vatican Website

The hacking group Anonymous took down several Vatican websites on Wednesday, saying it was targeting the "corrupt" Catholic Church, a day after a high-profile bust of the group's alleged leaders.

"Anonymous decided today to besiege your site in response to the doctrine, to the liturgies, to the absurd and anachronistic concepts that your for-profit organization spreads around the world," the hackers said in a statement.

Robot Artist 'Draws' Crowds at World's Top Tech Fair

A robot caricaturist that can draw an accurate likeness of its subject in just three minutes was wowing the crowds on Wednesday at the world's biggest IT fair, but not every customer was satisfied.

The robot, designed by Germany's Fraunhofer Institute, takes a black-and-white picture of the subject, its computer brain then calculates the contrasts and contours of the face and it sketches what it "sees".

AmEx Teams up With Twitter to Offer Shop Discounts

American Express has teamed up with Twitter to allow users to synchronize their credit cards with the micro-blogging site and take advantage of store discounts with a simple tweet.

AmEx said Tuesday that clients would be able to get exclusive discounts loaded onto their cards by mentioning offers by #hashtag on the popular micro-blogging site.
