Apple Records $11.6 bn Profit on Growing iPhone-iPad Sales

Apple's coffers continued to swell in the first three months of the year due to record sales of iPhones and iPad tablet computers, particularly in China and other parts of Asia.

Apple reported on Tuesday that it made a profit of $11.6 billion on revenue of $39.2 billion in the quarter ended March 31. The amount of cash Apple had on hand grew $12 billion to $110.2 billion.

U.S. Commission: Xbox Infringes Motorola Patents

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday issued a preliminary ruling that Microsoft infringed on Motorola Mobility patents in its hit Xbox 360 videogame consoles.

Administrative law judge David Shaw backed four out of five Motorola claims that the company's intellectual property was usurped in Xbox software for tasks such as efficiently moving video files or connecting wirelessly to the Internet.

Philips: Q1 profit at 249 million euros

Dutch electronics giant Philips posted Monday first quarter net profits of 249 million euros ($328.4 million), up from 138 million euros a year ago amid the sale of some real estate in the Netherlands.

Revenues for the group reached 5.6 billion euros, up from 5.3 billion euros a year ago, and slightly beating the 5.4 billion euros forecasted by analysts polled by Dow Jones news wire.

Light Bulb with 20-Year Life Unveiled in U.S. on Earth Day

A prize-winning, super-energy-saving LED bulb from Dutch electronics giant Philips said to last over 20 years went on sale Sunday to coincide with Earth Day.

The bulb that won the U.S. Department of Energy's "Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize" was available from retailers for $50, down from an initial $60 price tag. The company said it was planning discounts to bring the cost down to as little as $25.
