Indian-administered Kashmir largely shut down Wednesday after separatists called a strike in protest at the killing of three men whose bullet-riddled bodies were discovered in an orchard two days earlier.

Police say the deceased were local militants who were killed due to rivalry between different rebel factions in the conflict-stricken region, but separatist leaders say they died in police custody.

A policeman and a civilian were killed Tuesday when suspected rebels opened fire outside a Muslim shrine in Indian Kashmir, police said.

The militants targeted the police officer guarding the shrine of Tujjar Sharif, 55 kilometers (35 miles) northwest of the main city of Srinagar.

Pakistan on Saturday said two civilian men were killed and five other people were wounded in the latest cross-border shelling by India in the disputed region of Kashmir. 

The latest casualties came a day after Pakistan said a woman was killed and her husband and daughter, and a third female relative, were wounded by shelling in the Nezapir sector. 

A grenade exploded outside a mosque in restive Indian Kashmir on Thursday, injuring 10 worshipers after morning prayers in the first such incident in 14 years, police said.

Police are investigating but it was unclear who was behind the blast in Trenz village in the southern Kashmir valley which has seen increased security following a recent rise in militant violence.

Three civilians were killed Tuesday in heavy exchanges of fire between Indian and Pakistani troops along their border in the south of the disputed territory of Kashmir, officials from the rival sides said.

"One young man died during the shelling. We are asking residents in the area to remain confined to their homes," Danesh Rana, inspector general of police in the Indian-controlled part of the region, told AFP.

Shops and schools shut down in parts of Indian Kashmir on Wednesday to protest against a string of apparently targeted killings that has triggered fear in the restive region.

Hundreds of police and paramilitary troops in riot gear patrolled Kashmir's mostly deserted main city of Srinagar after separatist groups called a strike over the killings which they have blamed on undercover security forces.

Demonstrators set fire to an Indian flag and hurled rocks at riot police in Kashmir's largest city Friday as protests over the arrest of a top separatist leader turned violent.

Hundreds took to the streets of Srinagar, capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, to vent their anger at Masarat Alam Bhat's detention after he fronted a rally earlier in the week where followers waved Pakistani flags.

Two suspected rebels stormed a police station in Indian Kashmir on Friday, killing three officers and a civilian before being shot dead by government forces, police said.

The heavily armed militants hijacked a private jeep and killed the driver before lobbing grenades into the station, triggering a gun battle with government forces, inspector general of police for the region Danish Rana told Agence France Presse.

Indian and Pakistani troops traded fire along their tense border on Monday, killing four civilians including a teenage boy and a soldier in the latest in a series of deadly clashes, officials said.

Tension between the nuclear-armed neighbors escalated last week when an Indian border guard and two Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed during exchanges of heavy fire.

Militants hurling grenades stormed an army camp in Indian Kashmir on Friday, killing 11 troops and police in a day of violence in the Muslim-majority state where local elections are being held.

Six of the attackers also died in the audacious raid on the barracks in Uri, near the heavily militarized Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed Himalayan territory between India and Pakistan.
