Madrid Gets Own Version of Hollywood Walk of Fame

Penelope Cruz, Pedro Almodovar and Antonio Banderas were among 25 Spanish film stars honored with a sidewalk plaque on Madrid's new Walk of Fame, which was inaugurated Monday.

The granite, marble and steel plaques feature a large star and the celebrity's name, like the ones on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which has become one of Los Angeles' top tourist draws since it opened in 1960.

European Police Smash Lebanese Drugs, Money Laundering Network

European police have arrested six suspected members of a multi-national drug trafficking and money laundering ring and confiscated millions in cash, two police agencies in Europe said.

“More than eight European arrest warrants were issued against German, Dutch, Colombian, Lebanese and Turkish nationals suspected of being active members of this large and highly complex network,” the Hague-based European police and judicial co-operation agencies Europol and Eurojust said on Wednesday.

Thief Hides in Suitcase To Steal Bags in Spanish Airport Bus

A flexible thief squeezed into a large suitcase and then emerged to plunder valuables from other bags while inside the luggage compartment of a Spanish airport bus, police say.

The thief had a partner who would buy a bus ticket and place the suitcase in a bus from Girona airport to Barcelona in northeastern Spain, police said in a statement late Tuesday.

The creatures were uncovered in Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, Peru, the Philippines, West Africa, the US state of Oregon, the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the North Atlantic Ocean.

5.3 Quake in Spain Kills 10, Injures Scores

Two earthquakes struck southeast Spain in quick succession Wednesday, killing at least 10 people, injuring dozens and causing major damage to buildings, officials said. It was the highest quake-related death toll in Spain in more than 50 years.

The epicenter of the quakes — with magnitudes of 4.4 and 5.2 — was close to the town of Lorca, and the second came about two hours after the first, an official with the Murcia regional government said on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.
