Protesters Demand Release of Srebrenica Muslim Commander

Several hundred Muslim veterans of Bosnia's 1990s wars attended a protest Friday to demand the release of Naser Oric, a Bosnian Muslim commander arrested on a Serbian warrant alleging war crimes.

"We did not come to defend Naser Oric, because we know he is innocent," said one of the veterans, Zulfo Salihovic at a protest in Bosnia's capital Sarajevo.

Video Calls for Jihad in Balkans on Eve of Pope's Visit

Islamists claiming to be members of the Islamic State (IS) group called for jihad in the Balkans in a video widely reported Friday by local media, on the eve of a visit by Pope Francis to Sarajevo.

The 21-minute video, made in a slick style and carrying the logo of a production company linked to IS propaganda, appears similar to other videos released by the group.

Pope Francis to Visit Sarajevo in June

Pope Francis said Sunday he plans a June visit to Sarajevo, the city that became a bloody symbol of the Balkans wars of the 1990s.

He told pilgrims during weekly prayers at the Vatican that he would visit the Bosnian capital on June 6 to pray for peace and inter-religious dialogue in the Muslim-majority city.

Three ex-Officers Indicted for Role in Srebrenica Genocide

Three Bosnian Serb former police commanders were charged with genocide Thursday for their role in the slaughter some 8,000 Muslims men and boys at Srebrenica as the Balkan wars drew to a close in 1995.

The commanders "participated in the planning and carrying out of the Srebrenica genocide by providing man-power and technical means from the police forces," Bosnian prosecutor Boris Grubesic said in a statement.

Karadzic 'Driving Force' of Bosnia's Ethnic Cleansing, U.N. Court Told

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was the "driving force" behind ethnic cleansing during Bosnia's bloody civil war, including some of the worst atrocities since World War II, the Yugoslav war crimes court heard on Monday.

"The policy of ethnic cleansing has been fully exposed as has Dr. Karadzic as its driving force," U.N. prosecutor Alan Tieger said during closing arguments at the marathon five-year trial before the Hague-based court.

Sarajevo Pays Respect to Srebrenica Victims

Thousands of Sarajevans paid their respects on Wednesday to 175 Srebrenica massacre victims as they were transported for a joint burial to mark the atrocity's 19th anniversary later this week.

Veiled Muslim women, whose male relatives were killed in the July 1995 massacre by Bosnian Serbs, approached the truck transporting the coffins as it stopped briefly in front of Bosnia's presidential building.

Former Libya Rebels Light Up Sarajevo Film Festival

Hundreds of former Libyan rebels gathered in Sarajevo on Thursday to see the world premiere of a documentary dedicated to their 2011 fight against Moammar Gadhafi's regime.

The four-hour documentary "Tomorrow, Tripoli" by French director Florent Marcie depicts the everyday experiences of fighters in Zintan, the West Libyan hill town that was among the first to fall into rebel hands after an armed uprising broke out against Gadhafi in February 2011.

Famed Sarajevo Library Reopens 22 Years after Destruction

Sarajevo's famed architectural jewel, "City Hall", or the National Library, reopened on Friday, 22 years after it was destroyed by Bosnian Serb forces' shelling during the 1992-1995 war.

"It is the symbol of our strength to overcome the past and our hope for a better future," Sarajevo's mayor Ivo Komsic said at the opening ceremony after the sounds of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."

Peaceful Protests in Bosnia after Riots

Bosnia was hit by fresh protests against unemployment and corruption Saturday but the demonstrations were mostly peaceful as the country was left reeling from three days of rioting in the worst unrest since the 1992-1995 war.

Several hundred protesters again took to the streets of the capital Sarajevo and several towns across the country to vent their anger at the state of the economy in the Balkan nation where unemployment stands at 44 percent.
