Report: European States Seeking Solution to Presidential Crisis

Discussions are underway in European countries to find a solution to Lebanon's presidential deadlock by proposing the name of a security official who receives consensus, Western diplomatic sources in Beirut said Sunday.

The sources told the Saudi Okaz daily that the official should receive the support of Hizbullah and al-Mustaqbal movement.

As eyes gaze at Wednesday's dialogue session that is set to bring rival politicians together to discuss pressing issues, mainly the presidential deadlock, sources of the March 8 alliance have dimmed the hopes on its outcome as they say they are adamant to elect MP Michel Aoun “and no other,” or hold early parliamentary elections.

Reports: Shehayyeb's Waste Proposal Hit by Army Promotion Conditions

The approval of a proposal made by Agriculture Minister Akram Shehayyeb to resolve the country's waste crisis is facing a condition set by several parties on the promotion of army officers, An Nahar daily reported on Tuesday.

The newspaper said that Shehayyeb's proposal requires a cabinet session. But the Free Patriotic Movement, Hizbullah and the Tashnag Party have conditioned the activation of the government's work to the approval of the promotion of around 12 officers from brigadier-general to the rank of major-general.

Report: Gemayel Mulling Cabinet and Dialogue Boycott

Kataeb leader Sami Gemayel has reportedly warned that his party's representatives would suspend their participation in the cabinet if it failed to resolve the waste crisis this week.

“We will have to suspend our participation in the government if no solution was found to the garbage (crisis) this week,” a source in the March 14 alliance quoted Gemayel as saying.

Sources close to Speaker Nabih Berri have warned that Lebanon's rival leaders would be held responsible for the worsening of the country's crises if they take the dialogue session set to be held this month for granted.

The sources told pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat published on Thursday that the officials “will be held fully responsible for any deterioration (in the situation) in the country if they disregard Speaker Berri's attempt to salvage” Lebanon.
