Gaza's Hamas government on Sunday announced the creation of a committee to examine the "unlawful executions" of Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel during the recent conflict.

"The government has decided to set up a committee to study what happened with the unlawful executions which took place during the aggression," Hamas government spokesman Taher al-Nounou told reporters in Gaza City.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said on Sunday that the sweeping new powers he assumed this week are meant to be temporary, and called for dialogue to find common political ground in the country.

"The presidency reiterates the temporary nature of the said measures, which are not meant to concentrate power, but... to devolve it to a democratically elected parliament... as well as as preserving the impartiality of the judiciary and to avoid politicizing it," a statement from his office said.

Egypt could become an Islamist state or face another military takeover if President Mohamed Morsi's judicial power grab is left unchecked, U.S. Senator John McCain warned Sunday.

McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, urged President Barack Obama to be prepared to use billions of dollars of American aid as leverage to force Egypt's first Islamist leader to change course.

Syrian rebels on Sunday seized the training camp of a pro-regime Palestinian faction near Damascus after fierce clashes, a watchdog reported.

"Rebels stormed a Popular Front-General Command (PFLP-GC) training camp in the Rihan area of Damascus province, after violent clashes with local fighters," according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu admitted on Sunday that Turkey had resumed contacts with Israel to try to bring an end to the hostilities in Gaza, despite its decision to freeze diplomatic relations with the Jewish state.

"In the Gaza process, it's true, Israel held discussions with Turkey through foreign ministry and secret service channels," Davutoglu said in a televised interview, quoted by the Anatolia news agency.

Syrian troops on Sunday bombarded the outskirts of Damascus, where monitors said almost 50 people died in a battle for a military airport, as the country's 20-month conflict homes in on the capital.

Russia and France, meanwhile, prepared for talks on Tuesday in Paris at which Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and France's President Francois Hollande are expected to address differences over the Syria conflict.

Tens of thousands of Moroccans marched in support of the Palestinians in the country's two main cities on Sunday, after Israel's devastating eight-day bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Protesters in Rabat, who numbered more than 45,000 according to police, condemned Israel for "crimes against humanity" during the assault that killed more than 160 Gazans, and criticized Washington for supporting the Jewish state.

Egyptian journalists called on Sunday for a general strike to protest guarantees of press freedom in a draft constitution, amid a political crisis sparked by decree by President Mohamed Morsi granting himself sweeping powers.

They called for the strike during an emergency meeting of the Journalists Syndicate but have yet to set a date, attendants told Agence France Presse.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague urged the United States on Sunday to take a "decisive lead" on reviving the Middle East peace process following the deadly conflict in Gaza.

Following President Barack Obama's re-election this month, "we do look to the United States to give a decisive lead in the coming months," Hague told BBC television, adding: "They have crucial leverage with Israel that no other country has."

Jordan on Sunday opened a Bahrain-funded school in the Zaatari refugee camp near the Syrian border that can take up to 4,000 students, a Jordanian official said.

Jordan's education ministry and the U.N. children's fund UNICEF jointly run the school, in which 3,400 Syrian refugees are currently enrolled and taught by Jordanian and Syrian teachers.
