Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov has repeatedly said that Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun should give up his candidacy for the presidency to resolve Lebanon's political crisis.

Lebanon's Ambassador to Moscow, Shawqi Bou Nassar, has said in a report that Bogdanov was in favor for Aoun to “pave way for other candidates and allow other Christian personalities to announce their candidacies.”

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun has considered himself a consensual candidate stressing that he would not accept a "puppet" to rule the country.

Aoun told al-Joumhouria daily in an interview published on Friday that he told his supporters to mobilize for street protests.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi stressed on Monday that it was unacceptable for the presidential vacuum to last more than a year, hoping for a divine “interference” in the country's blood-stained history.

“We continue to pray for the election of a president, for stability and for a comprehensive reconciliation,” al-Rahi said at the opening of the synod of Maronite Bishops in Bkirki.

Speaker Nabih Berri has warned that the country can no longer bear the consequences of paralysis, saying the verbal feud between the rival parties would not have an impact on their dialogue.

“The situation can no longer tolerate a government or parliamentary paralysis and contacts and efforts are being made to guarantee a cabinet session and an extraordinary legislative session to adopt urgent draft-laws,” Berri told several local dailies published on Monday.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi lashed out at politicians Sunday, accusing them of steering the country according to their own interests and whims.

“No one has the right to deprive the country from it's head of state,” al-Rahi said during sermon from at Our Lady of Lebanon basilica in Harissa.

Former President Michel Suleiman condemned on Saturday the ongoing failure to elect a new president more than a year after his term ended.

He told Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3): “We demand the elimination of the two-thirds quorum at parliament to elect a president after we reached a dead end in this matter and none of the candidates garnered a majority of votes.”

The Change and Reform bloc rejected on Tuesday attempts to hold a cabinet session that will not address the security appointments.

Former Minister Salim Jreissati said after the bloc's weekly meeting: “We will not allow the government to convene and violate the constitution.”

Former President Michel Suleiman on Tuesday severely criticized the Free Patriotic Movement and Hizbullah without naming them for seeking to “paralyze” the cabinet and dragging the war in neighboring Syria to Lebanon.

“It is not acceptable to impose conditions on the cabinet,” Suleiman said following talks with a delegation from al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc at his residence in Yarze.

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat has advised Christian parties not to waste historic opportunities and to agree on a consensual candidate other than Free Patriotic Movement chief Michel Aoun and Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are in a dispute over the situation in Yemen, so there won't be any mediator to help Lebanese MPs elect a new president, Jumblat said in remarks published on Tuesday.

The Consultative Gathering welcomed on Friday the government’s decision on the northeastern town of Arsal, and the need to hold responsible all those obstructing the constitution.

In a statement read by Telecommunications Minister Butros Harb, the gathering, which is led by former President Michel Suleiman said: “We denounce how some politicians continue to ignore the danger that Lebanon is facing and continue to obstruct the parliamentary sessions to elect a president.”
