Speaker Nabih Berri questioned on Wednesday the recent political debates over the extension of the term of the current parliament.

His visitors quoted as saying: “Attention should instead be focused on the resumption of parliament meetings.”

The March 14 General Secretariat renewed on Wednesday its position to boycott the national dialogue “in light of Hizbullah's insistence to make light of the Baabda Declaration” and refusal to discuss its possession of arms.

It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's recent announcement that the party is willing to fire its rockets without consulting the Lebanese state only justifies our decision to boycott the dialogue.”

Speaker Nabih Berri said Wednesday that parliament is an authority by itself and can decide on the extension of its term if the need arises the same way the president has the right to use his authorities.

Berri made the remark to As Safir newspaper, a day after President Michel Suleiman said he would not sign any decree that calls for the extension of parliament's mandate unless a new draft-law is being prepared.

President Michel Suleiman postponed a national dialogue session that was set to be held on Thursday to January 2013 after the March 14 alliance most likely informed him of the opposition's final stance on boycotting the all-party talks.

The new date for the session was set for January 7, said a Baabda palace statement.

President Michel Suleiman reiterated on Tuesday his rejection to link the government crisis to the national dialogue and stressed that the parliamentary elections could only be postponed for a short period to pave way for the completion of drafting a new electoral law.

“I will not accept any misused extension of parliament's mandate and won't sign any decree in that regard,” Suleiman told a delegation from the Press Club.

The fate of a new round of national dialogue was unclear on Tuesday, two days ahead of the all-party talks set to be held at Baabda palace, over the insistence of the March 14 opposition officials to boycott the meeting.

An Nahar newspaper quoted presidential sources as saying that President Michel Suleiman hasn't yet taken the decision to postpone the dialogue but could announce the postponement on Wednesday when the March 14 alliance members make a clear announcement on their decision.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan praised on Saturday the efforts exerted by his counterpart Michel Suleiman locally and in the Middle East to boost peace and stability, stressing that Lebanon's security is linked to the situation in the region.

“Lebanon will advance,” Sargsyan told reporters in a joint press conference with Suleiman at the Baabda Palace.

President Michel Suleiman is hinging on foreign support to guarantee the success of the national dialogue set to be held on Thursday at the Baabda Palace, the Kuwaiti al-Rai newspaper reported.

Sources told the newspaper published on Monday that the March 14 opposition is expected to attend the all-party talks to express its support to Suleiman's recent stances.

Presidents Michel Suleiman is “very upset” with Iran's behavior in and positions towards Lebanon, reported the daily al-Mustaqbal on Sunday.

It revealed that Suleiman had sent last week a letter of complaint to his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmedinejad over the Hizbullah drone that flew over Israel in October.

President Michel Suleiman reiterated on Saturday calls for Lebanese foes to attend the all-party talks, urging officials not to favor any side in the Syrian conflict.

“Everyone should attend the national dialogue and officials shouldn't favor neither the Syrian regime nor the opposition,” Suleiman said after granting Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara al-Rahi the National Order of the Cedar medal, Lebanon's highest honor.
