President Michel Suleiman has reportedly expressed frustration at the failure of the political parties from across the political spectrum to take his opinion on the so-called Orthodox Gathering proposal and the cabinet's draft-law referred to parliament.

An Nahar daily quoted Suleiman's visitors as saying that the president reproached the rival Christian parties – the Free Patriotic Movement, the Lebanese Forces, the Phalange and the Marada - that backed the Orthodox proposal during a meeting they held under Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi last Sunday.

Speaker Nabih Berri visited Baabda palace on Thursday and discussed with President Michel Suleiman the latest developments on the Lebanese scene, the National News Agency reported.

"The talks focused on the proposed electoral draft laws,” the NNA detailed.

MP Michel Murr announced on Thursday his rejection of the Orthodox Gathering' proposed electoral draft law, fearing it might have “negative consequences on the future of Christians' rights in Lebanon”.

"I will not agree on something that might jeopardize Christians' acquired rights and take the country to the unknown,” Murr said after meeting with President Michel Suleiman in Baabda.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias arrived in Lebanon on Wednesday for talks with senior officials on the prospect of cooperation in the exploration of offshore oil and gas.

He kicked off his talks on Thursday with President Michel Suleiman, who thanked him for his country's support for Lebanon at various international meetings, especially at the European Union.

Independence Movement leader Michel Mouawad announced on Wednesday his rejection of the Orthodox Gathering's proposed electoral law, saluting President Michel Suleiman's critique of this “unconstitutional” suggestion.

“(Former Deputy Speaker) Elie Ferzli's law encourages sectarian conflicts in the country,” Mouawad said after meeting with Suleiman in Baabda, adding that adopting it will have severe consequences on the “Lebanese identity and on free Christian presence in the country”.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati expressed reservations on Wednesday on the so-called Orthodox Gathering proposal, saying MPs should agree on an electoral draft-law that guarantees a just representation.

In remarks to An Nahar daily, Miqati stressed the importance of reaching an agreement on “a draft-law that guarantees the fair representation of all sects and factions.”

President Michel Suleiman stated on Tuesday his rejection of adopting the Orthodox Gathering's proposed law in the upcoming parliamentary elections, describing it as “unconstitutional”.

"We encourage the electoral subcommittee to discuss the proportional representation law,” Suleiman said in an interview with the Progressive Socialist Party-affiliated newspaper al-Anbaa, adding that this so-called Butros draft law can be modified and improved to respond to the concerns of all parties in Lebanon.

Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Tuesday that his party will not obstruct any electoral law that has Christian consensus, voicing hope that the electoral subcommittee meetings would reach common ground among the rival political parties.

“I will not oppose the Orthodox Gathering proposal if the Christians agreed on it, regardless of my opinion,” Berri said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat stated that the meeting he held on Friday with President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati was an opportunity to assess the local and Arab situations, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.

He told the daily: “Talks focused on finding ways to end the political crisis in Lebanon given the halt of the national dialogue.”

President Michel Suleiman hailed on Saturday the completion of the reconciliation process in the Mountains, in particular, in the mixed town of Brih in the Shouf.

Suleiman considered that the reconciliation fortifies the national unity and coexistence among the Lebanese as it will strengthen the ties between the residents of the Mountains and the rest of the people.
