Police stopped more than 1,600 migrants trying to cross the border from Morocco into the Spanish territory of Ceuta on Tuesday, an official said.

The migrants were the latest in a tide of desperate people trying to breach the frontiers with Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish-held cities perched on the north African coast.

A wave of around 250 African migrants on Monday managed to breach the high defenses of the Spanish enclave of Melilla in Morocco, with more than half making it into the EU territory, officials said.

"Around 150 sub-Saharan immigrants succeeded in entering Melilla after launching a massive border assault," the local Spanish government representative's office said.

Roughly 60 migrants entered Spain's north African territory of Melilla on Wednesday after charging a barbed-wire border fence, officials said.

"At around 7:00 am about 150 migrants launched an assault and we estimate that around 60 managed to enter. We are waiting to get more data and specific details," a spokeswoman for Melilla town hall said.

Security forces averted an attempt by about 1,000 migrants to rush a towering, triple-layer border fence separating Morocco from the Spanish-held north African territory of Melilla, Spain's government said Tuesday.

Authorities say it was the latest bid by desperate migrants to enter the Spanish cities of Melilla and Ceuta by scrambling over the six-meter (19-foot) border fences or crossing the Mediterranean in flimsy vessels.

About 200 African migrants charged a barbed-wire border fence that separates the Spanish exclave of Melilla from Morocco on Thursday but less than 10 got over, local officials said, the latest in a string of coordinated assaults on the frontier.

The migrants caused light damage to a stretch of around 30 meters (100 feet) of the fence, a territory bordering northern Morocco, Spanish government officials in the territory said in a statement.

Around 100 African migrants stormed a border fence from Morocco into Spanish territory on Tuesday, leaving five police officers injured, Spanish authorities said.

Officials said about 40 of the migrants managed to cross the fence separating the Spanish enclave of Melilla from Morocco on the Mediterranean coast, in the latest in a wave of such attempts.
